Welcome to the forum.
If you're over in clonsilla you're in liffey brewers territory. We'll be having a meet up in the Lucan County bar on Thursday from 7pm. You should pop along.

I'd say that's probably a misconception. You can get pwdered beer kits alright and they can be quite good.
The powder is just Dry Malt Extract (DME), the same stuff you'd use in extract brewing.
Most beer kits com in the form of a can of prehopped Liquid Malt Extract (LME) and you can make some great beers with them.
I'd advise you to start off by making a basic kit beer so that you can see how it all works and gather the basic equipment needed.
Have a look at this behinner's guide to get you started: http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,669.0.html (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,669.0.html)
For cider, I'd recommend the same. Grab a cider kit and 'cut your teeth'. The cider made from the craft range kits seems to have gone down well.
Oh, and Welcome to the forum :)
+1 to LordEoin. Start with a kit beer - the most important part of brewing is sanitation, and this will teach you how to go about it. Sure, you've the rest of your life to go on to extract and all-grain. And you can get plenty of advice from the Liffeyers.
