Heya,
So, hoping that once I have some kegs I'll be bottling very little of my beer. However, for the odd night I want to bring the beer our of the house, let's say to a meet, I'm thinking of maybe getting a growler or two. Anyone know where you can pick these up or how well they work?
There's a few spots in Dublin to get them; Galway Bay bars, Sweetmans, that place in Ranelagh (Tap House?) and probably a few others.
I use a few 750ml swing tops though. They're much handier.
The Galway Bay bars sell them but they're certainly not cheap. If I remember correctly, they're over 10 euro. Bit steep considering you can buy 1 gal demi-john for half the price.
Dispensing into growlers does tend to knock a fair bit of the carbonation out of the beer, but maybe there's a technique to it.
I bought one over in america, was $5 dollars for the growler and $10 for a fill, I miss those prices. I think the Franciscan well have them as well. You can buy attachments for taps that allow the growler to fill from the bottom to avoid excessive foaming.
Anyone got a link to said attachment? I'm planning on making 22 L batches so I can always bottle a few, but the last two batches have come out closer to 17L after loss to hops and trub. Sometimes I miss partial boils...
something like this http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/gifts/glassware/growler-filler.html (http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/gifts/glassware/growler-filler.html) I remember coming across a way better engineered one, this looks like something you could build at home pretty easily, I might try it out at some stage.

something like this, attach a bit of tubing to reach the bottom of the growler and fill.
Excellent! Thanks. I think I'll hunt one down.

EDIT: I see its raheny. Ill sell you the two for 10e if you want?
Yeah why not. I'm away on holidays for the next 2 weeks or so, but can pick up after I get back. Sorted :)

Cool, just contact me when your ready
Just seen Hollands in Bray tweet they've got growlers for sake at the moment.
If you're ever in Cork, the Well sell full growlers of anything on tap for €20. refills are €16.
Not bad when you consider that my last fill was 4 pints of strong 'spring ale' for €16
I'm pretty sure I remember paying close €7 for a pint of something similar in the black sheep (although it's a bit hazy)
To be fair to Sweetmans & Galway Bay, their growlers are glass & imported from USA (even though you can get similar in GER). The Fran Well growlers are plastic so Id expect them to be cheaper.
They're a nice handy size for doing starters too!

Sorry...this is all I think of every time I hear about growler
Broken link there Imark :'(
You can get these mini-stainless growlers from the Home Brew Builder guy (though not obviously on his site) about £15 +P&P. Really robust units.
I was in Hollands today. They don't have any growlers yet.
