Title: Recipe critique, Simcoe/Amarillo Session IPA
Post by: Paul B on October 10, 2014, 05:31:53 PM
Hey all,

Am thinking of getting a peco boiler and moving to BIAB.  Have been playing around with beersmith and have come up with the following 3 gallon (11 litre) recipe, loosely based off a few similar ones I've seen online.

Wondering if anyone could let me know if they think it will work if Ive missed anything major?  Are the hops too much for an 11 litre batch (even for hop heads?)

Cheers!

If hops are not pellets you will loose a lot of volume to them,.
Also your mash efficiency might be high at 78%,  70% might be a better number.
I would have use that amount of boil hops before but the beer was strong. Should be interesting tho, I would like to taste it.

I was just listening to the brewingnetwork yesterday talking to Lauginitas head brewer about session IPAs and he was suggesting using wheat, rye, flaked barely, etc to add body and flavour to carry the hoppiness. And your hopping looks great on that. Personally I reckon I'd try to mash higher and get a bit more on the FG just to balance it a little more.

Thanks for the tips, I changed the mash profile to "BIAB full body" which increased the recommended temps.  I also like the idea of adding adjuncts, I'm thinking for the first go at it I'll keep it simple as possible with just the base malt + crystal 40, then if it turns out nice tweak it from there.

Well spotted, I was thinking that might be a little high myself.  Dropped the 'brewhouse efficiency' to 65% which seems to put the mashing eff at 70%.  Also in regards to losing volume, am a little worried about that, but planning on using hop bags and squeezing them as much as possible which will hopefully keep losses to a minimum.

This is very close to a founders all day IPA clone recipe I made recently, which was delicious!! It was just Simcoe/Amarillo.. was around 5%, I think the OG was closer to 1.052.. 40ish IBUs.

Music to my ears, as the All Day IPA was pretty much what inspired me for this recipe :) Care to post yours for comparison?
