Title: Douglas Fir Pine Needles
Post by: fishjam45 (Colin) on November 18, 2014, 08:01:25 PM
Evening all,

Has anybody ever brewed with Douglas Fir Pine Needles before?  If so would you care to share your recipe or at least how you utilised the pine needles?

I've been kindly given some pine needles and am going to give a festive brew a go.

Apparently you need REALLY fresh tips. Spring growth, sorta. That's all I have.

Thanks Tom.

The 2 main questions I have after looking around the Internet are:

1- How much to use?
2 - When to add them to the boil? Most recipes seem to be at flameout.

Gordon Strong has a few interesting pages in "Brewing Better Beer" about brewing with spruce tips. He quotes a talk given by Pete Devaris, so if you google: "pete devaris" "spruce beers" (https://www.google.ie/#q=%22pete+devaris%22+%22spruce+beers%22), you'll get some more info.

He has a recipe where he adds 950ml (he reckons it's better to measure the volume than the weight) @ 60min.
