Title: Riddle me this
Post by: admin on February 07, 2013, 09:35:57 PM
Two demijohns. One has a wine kit in it, Young's I think, but can't rem name, came from Tesco, other has Tesco red grape juice, 350g or so of sugar, with a teaspoon of wine yeast+nutrient. Both started the same time.

Kit has "stabiliser" and finings and is semi cloudy with 'lumps' in it since they were put in. Other has nothing added, but is crystal clear!

So far it's kit 0, cartons of juice 1.

I'm confused Tub!!

When you say "the kit has the stabiliser" had both fermented out?

Normally my kit wines that have a dose of finings and a stabilser (Pot.sorbate and maybe Sod. metabisulphate (SO2)) clear out pretty quickly.

If you leave any wine for long enough they tend to drop clear.

Some of the old country recipes can take 6 months to clear.

QuoteKit has the sachet of stabiliser added, and finings. The juice has neither, but is clearer!

Had they finished fermenting?

Some kits ferment out in 1 or 2 weeks, Supermarket juice wines can take more like 8 weeks?

Maybr... I've noticed that cranberry or grape clear pretty quickly, but add some pineapple and it takes forever.
