I could be persuaded. Whats the advantages of these rather than just buying pre crushed grain? I know its good if you want the grain freshly crushed but I am unsure that the hassle of building a hopper and cushing the grain would give a notable difference to the taste of the beer produced.

QuoteI could be persuaded.
You can tell your friends that you did everything yourself. From start to finish. You can explain to them how the "right gap" between the rollers are "important" for the flavor they are enjoying ;D

With the bulk buys I end up storing grain for quite a while. I want it to be as fresh as possible and I believe it stores better uncrushed. A lot of the guys over on HBT wouldn't dream of using crushed grain a few months old. I had a sealed bag of crushed grain from a homebrew shop when I got delivery of my bulk buy bag before and the difference was remarkable, the bulk buy stuff having a much stronger more pleasant aroma and deeper colour. As Tube said it'll make better beer like cooking with fresh ingredients!

Fermentation is the key! Having just crushed your grain sounds great but if you process is not up to scratch and your fermentation is not spot on, it all comes through in the beer. ( no matter whether your grain was crushed that day or not!)

Dark grains in particular keep their freshness for a lot longer if they haven't been crushed.

The short answer is you'll make better beer.

last question surely grain crushed professionally by a better mill (pre crushed) would out weigh the benefits of fresh crushed in a two roller grain mill.  I'm giving this one serious consideration as I can see the benefits for storing uncrushed grain longer. Although I have stored crushed grain for ages with no problems.

Lars do you fancy going for a three roller to get our order in? There doesn't seem to be too much interest in the second buy.

Out of the guys that have bought them on the last group buy, has the crush been ok with the fixed rollers?
Also can ya hook a drill up to them??

Just to clarify on the group buy prices, Don from Crankandstein was offering the discounted mill prices based on orders >$400.  You would still get the discounted shipping prices with 3 mills.

I guess you could tell him your order is related to the original group order and he might honour the lower prices based on that.

Hi Cambrinus, order not gone in yet. Don has confirmed that he'll give us the group buy rate but shipping costs are $48 per box and  abox will take 3 X 2Roller mills or 2 X 3Roller mills so being 4th in that would mean shipping the third mill would cost $48 unless we can get some more interested parties. Would you like to proceed on that basis? or maybe try and drum up some interest on boards.ie or beoir?
Guys, Ive been mailing Don and spoke to him on the phone, just waiting for him to invoice my paypal account and I'll make purchase. Ill pass on cost directly to you guys for initial purchase and shipping and when the revenue apply tax we can deal with that on delivery as I assume thats when itll be applied.

Hi Alex,
I think Cambrinus expressed an interest earlier in this thread. 3 is the magic number for reduced rate shipping and Don from Crankandstein was perfectly willing to give me the bulk buy discount when I explained that I just wasnt quick enough to get into the original group buy. You could just try and get yourself and 2 others interested and contact Don.

You should probably contact Don in crankandstein sooner rather than later and ask him for the group buy rate while our purchases are still fresh in his head. I spoke to him on the phone. He came across very well

You don't need em. 2S is all you'll ever need. Trust me!

Taf has both, and says the 3 series is overkill.

The extra roller will improve efficiency, is it worth that much extra money probably not and easy way to achieve same is 2 passes of course

Ok, not knowing where this was going I emailed Don. As per the previous reply, he's too busy with orders and won't give the discount. If orders are in 3 then there is a saving in the shipping.

At the listed price for the 2S model and shipping, orders of 3 works out at about €87 each

Hey lads.

I'm back from the dead!

Haven't been able to log into the site for ages and I'm very sorry I haven't been chasing Monster Mills on this.

I've handed this over to CARA as I just can't chase this any longer with work I'm doing at the moment.

I've cash put aside for the mill and I'm still in if this comes through.

A quick count shows 9 people interested.
It seems Don (Crankandstein) is very busy, so I emailed Fred of MonsterMill to quote me on his very best price for 9 x MM-2 mills shipped to Ireland.

-Frans
Title: Re: Crank and Stein Group buy 2
Post by: Cambrinus on April 30, 2013, 08:47:49 PM
Ok, so this was the reply from MonsterMill...

QuoteMM-2 - $111.15 x 9 = $1000.35
Shipping = $315 (we can ship 10 for the same price)
total - $1315.35

If you want them to different addresses, as long as they go to the same place in pairs, (two in each box to the same address) that's doable.

Assuming there will be 9 in on the order this works out on about €112 per mill. Ordering 10 mills would make very little difference on the overall price. Approx. €108 per mill. Depending on exchange rate.
Also I'm not sure about possible customs charges.

Let me know how ye guys want to proceed (or not).

I'm still up for it.

Thanks,

-F

Lads!

Before we progress I'm in communication with both Don (crank and Stein) and Fref( monster mill)

The deal originally granted to the 1st and 2nd group buy wont be given but discounts can be given for shipping

I'll post up price for both tomorrow and go from there. At the end if we can save up to 20 euro per mill, it all helps in the end

What was the VAT/ Tax on the last Crank and Stein Group buy? I'm guessing we should allow 20 to 25 % ??? All imports from outside the EU are liable to it.

Still a good price but gonna be 140-150 by the time we gets to crankin grain!!

What was the VAT/ Tax on the last Crank and Stein Group buy? I'm guessing we should allow 20 to 25 % ??? All imports from outside the EU are liable to it.

Still a good price but gonna be 140-150 by the time we gets to crankin grain!!
There was no tax applied, I think they came in between 60 and 70 euros each delivered on the one I did

Here we go! I have received the last reply, converted the prices in to Euros at todays rates.

Option 1

Monster mill MM2 (6" rollers) - at this price we have to order 10 mills and at least 4 hoppers
Hoppers each Euro 39
Mills each Euro 104

Option 2

Monster mill MM2 (6" rollers) - 9 mills only
Mills each Euro 111

Option 3

Crank and Stein 2S (4" rollers) - 9 mills only
Mills each Euro 87

Option 5

Millars Mills from Electro brew B3 (8" rollers) - 10 mills and hoppers combined
Mill and hopper each Euro 117

Option 6
Cereal killer grain mill from Adventures in homebrewing (5" rollers) - 9 mills and hoppers combined
Mill and hopper each Euro 105

Some options had to be ordered in 10 although there are only 9 takers on the list. Also some had to have hoppers for the discount given.

We all have to decide on the one only!
Once the decision has been made on the preferred option, I suggest we mark the price up to account for any currency fluctuation or customs.

Dodge, job well done!

My preference is:
1 - Option 2 (MonsterMill)
2 - Option 3 (Crankandstein)

And would consider:
3 - Option 1 (MonsterMill & hopper)

Option 5 and 6 look like good value and ready to go. Anyone know what they are like?

Crank and who? Option 5  8 inches of hardened steel. Perhaps the new kid on the block but looks good. Dodge great work on options, but  6 options 9 people.......... we might be here a while. I'll go with the majority regardless.

I wouldn't mind the convenience of having a hopper supplied so options 5 and 1 would be my preference. Option 3 also looks good as I reckon I could make a hopper on the cheap

Here is the final list!

We are still 1 person short but I think we should move soon.

I have also allowed all to keep their preferred option or near enough and have got confirmation both from both companies that we will purchase from

Millars Mills B3 complete mill and hopper
Dodge
Cathal O D
St Fursey
DaMun

Total price  converted Euro 118.16 each (need to bring price up to cover any extras - suggestions?)

Crank and Stein 2S mill only
Alex (no reply yet but this is the initial one he chose)
Cambrinus
Cara
Damo
Trombyy
(One more taker needed)

Total price converted Euro 80.05 (Don Came down on price slightly)(need to bring price up to cover any extras - suggestions?)

Please can all let me know if they are happy with list. Any changes to your options need to be made soon but to remember that we have to try to keep the quantities form the 2 companies the same since this is the best deals that I can get with shipping included
Title: Re: Crank and Stein Group buy 2
Post by: Dodge on May 04, 2013, 05:41:56 PM
Thanks Shane. The mills are shipped in 3 and the reduced price per mill and shipping is why we have to order the 6. If after all have confirmed there choice and there is still no takers, it would be great if the club could purchase. As you said, there will be no issue selling the last one

Hi lads,

Just got back to internet now. I'm happy to go with the Millars Mill and hopper job and have cash ready to go. If you've already put mine through as crank and stien no bother but if there's time there I'd prefer the hopper and mill job.

Thanks for all this great work.

Lads, The C&S price seems to have no Importation tax added or does the group buy price include that.

Or is one of the benefits of Club membership that the Club takes the non EU importation taxes?? Because items coming from the US are liable to this. There is a methods to avoid ..... not evade and if they are employed great. otherwise the receiver may be given a COD requirement before the goods are handed over.

Just asking! As there may be additional costs

Latest update

The crank and stein mill order has gone through and I'm just waiting for Don to email me shipping details. So that's the 3 mills ordered

For those that wanted the mill and hopper from Millars mills and that includes myself, unfortunately there is a backlog with production and Todd has just informed me it will be the end of the month.

I know it's taking some time but there is nothing else to do but wait.

Anymore news and I will update

Thanks for your patience! :)

There is no changes allowed. All that have there name in are in for the buy.

Millars Mills B3

Dodge
Cathal O D
Alex
Trombyy
Damun
St Fursey

I have contacted Todd this week and he will let me know via email next week.

This list above was the finalized list for the Millar mills and the order will be put through next week once Todd gives me the invoice.

With the luck of the draw, the 3 Crank and Stein mills that arrived a couple of days ago were caught with customs charges. That being said, when I get the invoice I will have to add a bit on to cover this.

As you are all aware there are mills and hoppers available via Homebrewwest. I personally am going to stick with Millar mills.

Since its been a few weeks, if the above takers no longer wish to be involved let me know now otherwise I will assume its still a go ahead. St Fursey has opted out.

Thanks for your patience and understanding
