Title: Hop Rhizome
Post by: Tom on January 23, 2013, 03:50:09 PM
Looking for that perfect valentines day gift for your partner?*
What YOU need is a Nugget hop!

That's right, in the region of 10 - 13% alpha acids, makes a good IPA apparently.

Should be splitting the rhizome soon, if anyone fancies a swap?

*Not guaranteed to arrive before April.

Haha - must get round to seeing what I have - that time of year again.

We should prob start a "hop plant bank" section!

Hey Tom,

I'd like to get some crowns started.

Could you point me in the right direction of a supplier?

Here is the list from my *ahem* hop growing blog.

www.essentiallyhops.co.uk
a little place in the south-west of England*.

www.find-me-a-gift.co.uk
if you're not fussy on the kind of hop you get!

the-plant-directory.co.uk
one variety only, but at least they tell you what it is!

*I'll vouch for these boys (girls). That's where mine came from. I don't think there are any in Ireland.

Beware of the find-me-gift.com

They are unspecified varities and may even be Male.

Male hops are an illegal weed in Ireland and you can be prosecuted for growing them

The supplier I used in Germany is http://www.eickelmann.de/Hopfen-Shop/index.php?language=en

Good selection and reasonnable delivers ( when I ordered a few years ago )

I'm trying to have that law repealed at the moment as it was brought it to (sort of) protect a hop industry that we no longer have. Wild males are all over the place in England...

But anyone looking to get hops, don't buy a male. The flowers are no use.

You speak for yourself !!

We don't want male hops in Ireland!

The Malahide hop growers collective (ie. me) don't want any males in the vicinity of our ladies.

The reason being that fertilised females are no use in beer (bit like wives in a brewery really)

Males that are kept for breeding purposes are kept well away from the ladies until some bugger comes after them with a paint brush.

(Now if the inuendo dept. of the NHC can't pick up on the last paragraph I'm going back to straight talking)

Err Why??

Also don't forget the Molson-Coors /FW are talking of setting up a product co-op which could include Irish grown hops! :)

Will_D, you remember the old days when it was the wimmin who were the brewers? Not sure how I feel about my woman's lack of interest in brewing.

Sigh. Would be nice to see some hedgerow hops too, IMO.

Can I put dibs on a WGV please rossa?

I should also have plenty of cuttings once they start to grow a bit. Mostly fuggles and cascade.

My two favorites. I'm gonna have to dig up your garden some day and run away like a thief in the night. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkJqKOb0ZhY)  ;D

You are more than welcome to dig up my garden, as would save me doing it!

Hello, sorry for reopening the topic.
I am a beginner brewer from Romania. If any of you have some spare rhizomes you can send them to me, i will apreciate it. I could pay the shipping cost...or send you some rhizomes from my hops (i have only Cascade, Hallertauer, Saaz and N. Brewer from eickelman), but my plants ar in the first year, i am not sure that they have rhizome yet.
I can only buy hops from eichelman or willingham-nurseries, but they have a pretty high shipping cost for Romania.
Thanks!

Welcome aboard bionut. No problem sending you rhizomes next year. I've sent some to Hungary already earlier this year.
Thanks! I wasn't expecting such a quickly reply. Put me on the waiting list :) If i will have rhizomes in the spring i will offer gladly to those in need ( maybe i can bury a vine to get some rhizomes :D)
Thank you again. Cheers!

Wow! That looks very well! :o
I glad i found such a united comunity. In Romania the homebrewing comunity is pretty small (we, as a nation, used to make wine) so is really hard to get an opinion on something. Is discouraging when you wait 2-3 weeks for a reply  ;D

Hello again, i want to remind you that i could use some spare rhizomes if you will have :)
My adress is:

Batrinache Ionut-Alexandru

Thank you!

You don't need to. It'll be back, bigger and stronger than ever.

Aye hope so...just saying I don't want to try to split it. Wanted a buddy for her too  ;D

I'm in the market for 1 or 2 hops also, got a Challenger from Tube year before last, nurtered it to develop the root system and  now have it potted up in a "large" pot.
It's starting to sprout at the moment but it looks very lonely like billy-no-mates...  :'( needs a few friends... any offers from the hops lonely hearts club???   :-*

I have root cuttings, but theres no movement on them.
The balance of hops I need to hold on to, so fingers crossed I will have some next year.

Post by: Tom on April 04, 2014, 10:53:32 AM
JohnRM, check just below the surface of the soil for little white grubs. They nibble the roots and really slow down the growth. I've lost a few cuttings this winter to those feckers. They're bad. If you've some of last year's growth above soil level, give it a little pull, and if it feels loose you've got chafer beetle larvae. I've just spent the last hour on a search and destroy.

You calling me names again Tom?
I pulled up my hops before season started, chopped and transplanted them holding on to the left-over roots.
I AM that grub  ;)

Of course, what I meant to say was "watch out for little JohnRMs, just below the soil"!

Good thinking there with digging the rhizomes up. Let me know how it affects the yield, if at all.

Credit where credit is due  ;)
I have one rhizome bustling with activity in a pot in a polytunnel. One shoot is up to 1m already.
The rest (new arrivals) are pretty tame.
