I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in this but just incase, I thought I could show you all what I've been working on. I started building a bartop arcade machine, in truth I started it last year but got side tracked by other shiny things.
I've got some free time in the coming weeks so there's no better time to finish it.
So far the Arcade is sitting like so

Unfortunately I don't have any photos from before this point. It's covered in matt black vinyl with red t-moulding, when I started I didn't have much of a theme going, originally it was going to be Mortal Kombat. It's now changed to Street Fighter, I did a quick mock up of the side art.
The computer is a small Gigabyte ITX board with 4GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. I'm looking to upgrade the Processor and the Graphics Card once everything is put together. The monitor is either 20" or 17" I can't remember :)
Everything is a bit messy at the minute, I'm packing the HDD with Emulators and Roms. The list of emulators it will be running :
MAME
Playstation 1
Sega Genesis
Sega Dreamcast
Nintendo 64
Super Nintendo
Nintendo
Atari 2600
Atari 5200
Atari 7800
Commodore 64
Gameboy Colour
The front end is Maximus Arcade, but once I upgrade the Processor and GC I might upgrade to Hyperspin.
I was doing some testing last night, TEKKEN working for the PS1 (sorry about the crap photo).
I hope to have it fully constructed this Saturday, once its all together I can order the Perspex for the screen and finally get the side art on it.
Has anyone else made their own arcade cabinet? or if anyone has questions about building their own feel free to ask, I'll try my best to answer.
Now that I've posted it here, I have to finish :)
Wow! Until you mentioned mocking up the art I assumed it was a kit! Fair play.
Wow impressive project - love the artwork!
It looks like the NHC has another brilliant graphic artist/designer in its midst!
What board are you using for connecting the joystick..I used i-pac on my cabinet, highly recommend...Nice artwork...where did you pick up the T moulding?
Cheers Folks :)

I'm using a controller kit I got online, unfortunately it's not as good as i-pac, but it seems to be holding its own :)
I got the t-molding from Arcade World UK, think I paid £20 delivered. Its a good job, although I used a dremel to cut the slot for the molding,
never again!! I'd recommend getting an actual slot cutter for a router, it would save you a lot of time!
Mine is currently in multiple parts waiting to go out to the new shed. I'm getting by with my Xarcade and TV.
That is deadly.such a cool idea.I'm pretty sure there's a section on boards.ie that has lots of other folk who build their own arcade machines
Dear Jesus... Is there some kind of guide I can follow for something like this. I've built a few pcs etc but I need this in my life haha.

I also have the Xarcade, that's what put me on to the bartop ^-^
I like.
I was raised on 8 bit arcade games. That's where all my money went as a kid.
For anyone that is interested, there are some raspberry pi arcade projects floating about too. Well worth looking into.
Highly recommend retropie for the raspberry pi..excellent front end with built in scrapers
Hey acott love the job you've done so far and the artwork is to notch. I'm building one of these at the moment too I just cut the MDF and hope to put it together the weekend.I was going to use a raspberry pi to power it because I have one lying around and was going to emulate whatever I could with it. Street fighter, mortal combat and ps1 are beyond its capabilities unfortunately. I was going to use it because it's cheap also but the board you have looks the business and is powerful enough to do pretty much everything and it's making me think :) tekken is one of my favourite games ever and if you're gonna do something might as well do it right ;) making a man cave in my shed and I'm starting to think I'm better off with something more powerful. Where did you get the board your using? Also armdecor google 2 player bartop arcade machine instructables there is a brilliant tutorial I'm using at the moment
So sheds need...
Draft beer, Dartboard, Video Games, Pool table, Fussball and a hot tub.
What else?

A pole.......?
Ring board is fun too
:D
Very nice artwork on the bartop.
I have a Neo-Geo MVS currently rigged up to the TV using a homemade Supergun which I hope to house sometime in the future in a bartop.

Hey Marzen,
I had originally started off with the same idea of using the PI, however I soon realised the limits and did some digging on forums. A lot of people were using the mini ITX boards, they were able to provide more juice in comparison to the PI and were neat enough that they didn't take up too much room in your cab.
The one I have is a Gigabyte E350 AMD, I picked this up new on ebay for €55, it doesn't come with RAM, power or a HDD but it does have a Dual Core AMD processor, far better than the PI, you can always upgrade this for a better processor too. I got my RAM from ebay for €30, the HDD is an 80GB sata drive I had lying around and the power is from and old PC - in all it cost me €85. If you didn't have power or a sata drive, you could round this up to about €110...check adverts regularly, you can get some great deals on computer parts.
The setup I have runs Windows XP flawlessly and the Maximus Arcade front end is much more appealing for the end user in comparison to the PI. PS1 runs like a dream, my girlfriend loves Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, so once she could play those I got the go ahead for the cabinet ;D ;D
If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask!

Raspberry pi will run Street fighter no problems
Thanks for the link Scott that looks perfect. Having XP would definitely suit better as I could have kodi as my media centre and YouTube for tutorials for whatever project I'm doing at the time. I'm thinking of getting a projector some time in the future and could easily use the arcade machine for this too. For the time being I'll use the pi as the other board will fit in easily enough later and I have plenty to do in the meantime
Not wanting to hijack the thread but...
While I was still in the States I built this puppy. Found a shell of a Pengo arcade for $10(!!). Had a busted screen but the wood was in good shape and even better it came with a full coin slot. Repaired the whole thing, bit of spray paint and it looked a lot better. Found a real Golden Axe marquee on ebay and bought the stickers etc via some specialized online arcade stores. Got a cheap PC in there. Which reminds me I blew it when I plugged it in (forgot to change the voltage switch), need to sort that out...
BTW bartop looks cool!

Nice, is that a full size job? can't beat $10!!
I got some deliveries today, nothing major but part of it all the same.

Marquee light, this will connect to the PC power source. I probably should of got something a little larger but
hopefully it will do the trick. I don't need it to be absolutely blinding!

2 Joypads for PS1 games - Needed these as there's not enough buttons on the current control panel.
This also opens up the option to have PS2 games, but I'll need a larger HDD. I've ordered 2 USB connectors which will sit in the front of the cabinet, next to the player and coin buttons. I'll build a mount to hold the controllers inside the cab, so they can be taken out when needed.
Excited to get this built! :)
Yep full size job
For the marquee I got a plug in light from Woodies. Much easier than plugging it into the computer
TOG are into this sort of thing!

Never heard of TOG, just checked out their site and they do some really interesting things! Will definitely have to pop along to one of their evenings
There is also a thread about TOG having to find new premisses and our man Shinny has negotiated a NHC reduced "Brewer Membership"

It was a busy Saturday as I finally got down to putting this thing together! :)
Got the sides and front panel on!
I'm using a set of Creative USB speakers, when I took them apart they were the perfect fit for the speaker bar.
Speaker bar, lights and top of the cabinet
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24502376/Arcade/20150131_112418.jpg)
Had to drill two more holes in the front panel for coin buttons, I miscalculated the first cut and it ended up quite close to the 1 player button, so everything wasn't off I had to replicate it on the other side, annoyed with how close the buttons are :(
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24502376/Arcade/20150131_141816.jpg)
Got the monitor mounted ( After playing with the cabinet yesterday I think it needs to come up an inch or so and have the angle adjusted )
Backdoor is fitted with hinges and two roller clasps for easy access.
Control panel in, this also has hinges and roller clasps for access to the wiring and the monitor buttons.
Powering up, got the buttons linked up for testing, I'm really happy with the lights for the marquee. They give off great light without taking up too much space. You can see here what I mean about the monitor, it could come up a bit ( The monitor and the buttons look crooked, that's just the angle of the photo )
So that was my weekend, spent the whole day Saturday getting it to this stage and all of Sunday trying to get MAME working, luckily I did and now theres 4000 + games on it. Perspex was ordered yesterday and I've been promised it by Tuesday, order for artwork is going in today...it's almost complete!
I forgot how addictive bubble bobble is! :)
Perspex arrived and I got the art yesterday, decided to stick everything last night....and I had some serious problems.
On the advice of others I purchased the art printed on Car and Motorcycle adhesive, I didn't know this stuff was so thin and stretchy.
The trouble is, this stuff is incredibly sticky, if you put it down and make a mistake lifting it to replace is next to impossible. This left me with some bubbles that couldn't be pushed out and some creases that are breaking my heart.
I know the prime objective of the cabinet is to play arcade games and not to be an art piece but it's the graphic designer in me that is looking for perfection.
I messed up the monitor bezel and the control panel, so they aren't on yet, so in total its 90% finished. I'm going to get in contact with a local car wrap company to see if they can print and stick some new art.
You cant notice any defects here, I'm happy with the design and how it looks overall!
I think it looks great.
v2 will be perfection.
I'll give you eur100 for the the dodgy one

Cheers John ;D ;D
Btw, was the film you used that 'wrap' they use? If doing it again what material would you use?
Yeah it's supposed to be the same stuff they use on cars.
The black vinyl I used first was much better, it was a little thicker, more forgiving and you could easily push bubbles and lift to fix creases. If there was an option to print on this I would do it in a heart beat!
I used a website called pixartprinting they were really quick with the order ( 2 days from Italy ) and cheap, €15 delivered and the print was 103x103cm. I'm going to mail them to see if they do something similar to the vinyl, could be my next option.
Looks great. .. The secret with the car adhesive is to mist the back of it with water.. It allows you a bit of play when aligning it up

And also to vacuum the timber to be covered and then use a damp cloth to wipe it down. :) I used to do the stain glass once and micro dust under the sticky sheet was a bitch. :)
It was a hard fought battle! I was talking to the local printer, he's charging €80 for fitting :o
Too steep for me, even though I know it would be perfect!
I seem to recall somewhere that to position "sticky" vinyl you spray water on the base (substrate) first. Then lay on the vinyl and it will move about. Next squeegy the water out and the adhesive will eventually grab.
Another trick I used when laminating Formica with Evostick is to use silicon kitchen parchment which you slide off to one side as the laminate starts to grab!
HTH: WIll
Since the side art was really playing on my mind, I ordered it again but this time on a thicker laminated sheet. It was easier to manoeuvre and push the bubbles out, so I spent last night doing it all over again. Thankfully I had no problems and I'm over the moon with it, also got the bezel and the control panel art on.
I've loaded it up with over 4000 games between Nintendo, SNES, Mega drive, PS1, MAME and Pinball. I didn't go ahead with the other consoles as I'll never be done playing what's already on it.
It has been a great project from start to finish. The total spend on this was €445.68 ( €97.56 of which was all postage costs ) I was hoping to come in under €500 so I'm chuffed. If anyone is thinking of doing this I can't recommend it enough, the nostalgia is immense.
These pics were taken quite late, sorry for the poor quality, I'll get some pics of it in action up later :)
This has taken up all my evenings, finally, I can now go back to making beer ;D
