For this year, we are looking for you to brew the best American Ale style beer you can.
Based on BJCP Cat 10 - American Ale (http://www.bjcp.org/styles04/Category10.php), we want you to brew your best Pale, Amber or Brown Ale.
The closing date for entries is 9th May.
The competition will be held on Sat 23rd May.
Location: Wicklow Wolf Brewery, first competition to be held in the middle of a working brewery.
There are prizes for each category, with a grand prize for Best of Show.
---
Max 60 beers, (Limit: 1 beer per person per category).
Cost €5 per entry.
Open to members of NHC or Beoir.
Full details and the link to the Entry Form will follow.
Please PM if you want to volunteer for stewarding or judging.
Is this open to all?
Cheers, it is indeed.
(Edited title to reflect)
Good stuff :) Splashed out on beer smith yesterday and first thing I did was design a American amber using stuff from a diipa I couldn't brew because of illness. I'll only need a few extra bits and should have enough to give the brown a lash too. Think I'll make it at the lower end of the abv scale and make it nice and sweet. Something sessionable hopefully.
Oh I'm planning a Pale Ale and a Brown Ale soon. Might make this my first comp depending on how they turn out.
All the beers for this will have been brewed during the winter/spring so the quality should be quite good.
Anyone know of a good American brown ale that's handy enough to get?
Brooklyn brown ale is one of the bjcp examples and should be easy enough to get
I would also go with sierra nevada tumbler
TUMBLER TUMBLER YUM YUM :) :)
Tumbler is a lovely beer but is not an American Brown by style. Its got smoked malt in the grist & you can defo taste it. We did this entire category at one of the BJCP nights in Galway & Brooklyn Brown scored very high.
Nice one on the comp btw. Might brew an amber.
breckles brown by anchor is ridiculously good i couldn believe citra could go so well with those kinds of malts thats a great american brown example

Question: I wont be able to attend the event, but would still like to enter my beer for feedback. Is it worth my while? How is the feedback given?
Cheers.
Competitions are a good way to receive objective feedback on your beer, they are held in controlled envirnoments with anonymous judging; so subjective factors, like sitting in front of you saying your beer has a problem doesn't become personal.
The competition will be judged & run to BJCP standards. The feedback will be similar to these BJCP Exam Sheet examples (http://www.bjcp.org/examscores.php) (See Modern Tasting Exam Scoresheets at the bottom of the page).
We hope to get the scoresheets scanned & made available within a week or so of the exam.
There is no need to attend the competition, you just need to Register Here (http://goo.gl/forms/08U5J2YpEi) & get your entries to us.
How to get your bottles to us?
All the NHC clubs are generously acting as collection points for the competition. Please contact them to arrange delivery of your entries to them. Click Here for your local club (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/index.php/board,49.0.html).
Have the labels been emailed out yet?
When you say final date of entries is 9th of may, does that mean the bottles have to be dropped off by then?

Went to my junk folder so I must have missed them, cheers!
I'm not going to brewcon but can I still drop the beers in?
It's not to late to buy a ticket.
Make sure they are marked for our attention with labels & fees attached (make sure they're packed securely, no visible fees).
Hey folks I paid for three entries but I'll only be submitting one (the pale). Can I offer the other two spots to anyone that wants them. Seems like a waste otherwise. If it can't be done - no worries.

You mean registered? Or have you given money to someone!
If it's only the form you're fine, just send in the one entry, with it's entry & it's fee.
I was trying to have something ready, unfortunately life got in the way, sorry lads!

You've got mail, labels attached.
So, can you actually attend the competition in wicklow wolf brewery or is it just for the judges?
Just for the judges I'm afraid, plenty of pics so you can see whats going on
CH, is the brewery itself in "Galtrim Park"? I had a look on Google maps and it looks pretty residential.
Yeah, its the red gate isn't it?
It has a 6 x 20ft wolf on it ;)
Ha! It was repainted since I saw it last year. Street view need to do another run. :D
