Just wondering how you choose what hops for what beers. Boil times etc.
Are there specific hops for specific styles?
Trial and error over the years and taking hints from commercial beers mostly.

That's what I've been doing, works well so far BUT I want to brew a SMaSH lager.
Pale ale malt & ? And yes it's is for BmC wife before you ask :)
As far as I know the British ales use British hops and American ales use american etc. You can find a lot of info online about what hop varieties go with certain beer styles too.
I want to try SMaSH brewing too. Sounds like a good way of familiarising yourself with different types.
A lager a? Would you not try a lager malt? Pilsner, bohemian pilsner, floor malted boh. pils., lager, vienna malt (amongst others) are great base malts for lager style beers (as is pale!)
Hops wise, German are the guys here, Saaz, Mitelfruh, Hersbrucker etc etc Alot of the new hipster breweries are starting to put out hoppy lagers and pils too so again experiment away!
Take the recipe for Budvar for example (25 litres)
Pilsner Malt 5300g
90min boil
Saaz 50g @90min
Irish moss 10g @15min
Mash
50 for 20mins
60 for 40mins
70 for 40mins
mash out
20EBU
4 EBC
1048 OG
1011 FG
Lager yeast
Lagered for 3 months

I can get my hands on Pilsner malt quite cheap so yep I'll use that ant I have plenty of saaz
Stupid quistion about mash...is that the temp for mins (50 for 20 mins etc).
Yeah 50 degrees, 60 degrees etc 66 for the whole length would probably suffice. That was just a copy from the Protz & Wheeler "Brew Classic European Beers at Home" book

Often when I drink at home and I like a beer I'll look up clone recipes, chat, etc about that beer and try to get a sense of whats gone into it. Only takes a minute on your phone and helps to combine ingredients and their flavours in your head.

Who do you phone? A 'HOP' line??? :) :D ;D :(
(in fairness that joke would have been more hilarious if we were still in the old days when phones were used to make phone calls)
