I'm making a new bar top out of a large piece of ash, there is going to be waste so Im going to make a mash paddle. The only thing I'm not sure of is what to use to finish it.
Obviously sanded but Can I use yacht varnish or other types of interior varnish (plenty of not quite empty tins).
It's best to leave the wood bare. Just give it a wash with hot water before and after brewday :)
Good article here (http://byo.com/stories/issue/item/373-build-a-mash-paddle-projects).

Cheers for that, the article has the info I was after.
Well here is what I finally came up with..
Since Im useless a woodwork I drew the outline and a friend cut it before I drilled the holes....
I know I was told to leave it natural but could I use tung oil, since it's food grade?
Also should I do anything particular before christening this baby next week
I personally wouldn't finish it. I wouldn't want anything leeching out even if it is food grade
Leave it bare. I use a hurley myself. Just give it a wash with warm water and hang it up to dry. If any oil gets into the finished beer you will have no head :(
If mine gets a bit mank i scrape the top layer off with a stanley blade.
That wouldn't be possible if it had oil/varnish
Naked it is so...
Her maiden voyage is next week in a light lager for a party in august :)
Cheers for advice lads
If you want to stop the wood from splitting/cracking you should use olive oil, very light coat and wipe it dry after use. ;D
They (whoever they are) tested wooden chopping boards versus the colour coded plastic yokes. They were used, washed as you would at home and guess what?
The natural wood boards were signigficantly "cleaner" (when it comes to micro-organisms) that the plastic FG boards!
My white oak mash paddle just gets mashed and rinsed! Would not recommend olive oil or any other oil as it may well kill the head.
Anyone into rock climbing? There is such a thing as a "psycological belay". It looks good, you think its good but really its Sh*te as a belay.
So just spray your paddle with some Starsan like wot I do!
