Hey Gang, anyone ever come across these guys in france https://www.saveur-biere.com/en/
seem to have some decent pricing and some really good value beer with gift glass sets, are they legit ?
The prices are consistent with French retail pricing for French beers. Licking my lips at the 3 Monts stuff tbh.
So this doesn't appear scam my or anything
In theorey if you buy excisable stuff in Europe and have it delivered to Ireland you are liable for excise duty!
It only works when you drive it yourself!
Maybe a small order to start with?
Could you elaborate on that? Is excise handled differently to VAT across the eu?
Excise Duty:
(These numbers are made up!!)
In country X alcohol is taxed at say 20 cents per unit of something
In Ireland its taxed at 50 cents per unit of something.
So if your bottle in country X has 60 cents of alcohol duty, when you have it shipped into Ireland you will have to pay 1-50 less the 60 cents!
I don't think VAT is a problem!
Vat is evaluated and paid in country of sale, the vendors country, whereas excise is calculated based on consumers country.
Or at least that appears to be how it works. Makes a bit of sense. Can't imagine the Irish gov opening up the local booze market to foreign competition without ensuring they get their cut.
I've come across the query re excise etc on boards another time too. My dad bought some wine 2 yrs ago leaving an italian airport coming home on holidays, had a taste etc (it wasnt in duty free or anything just in the departures hall) got either 12/24 bottles shipped home (the charge was the same something silly like e15.00 per delivery) they now phone him every 6/8 months and he's got them a couple time, never been charged any extra. I think on boards it was a bargain alert for an xmas advent beer calendar, I'll see if I can find the link and if anyone paid any excise.
Maybe its luck of the draw .
Anyhow, I placed a small order for a few gift glass sets with beers, I'll let ya know if 1) they come at all 2) if I get stung for duty
It might only kick in above certain thresholds
thinking of getting some beer from here http://www.web-bier.de/

No but Thanks for the link, i just placed an order with them. You have to buy in quantities of 24, delivery charge to Ireland is 20.90, total came to 53.79 which is not bad for 24 bottles. I paid by paypal so that's safe enough.
I will report back when they arrive.
I thought once it was within EU that it was fair game as in no extra duty to be paid coming into Ireland ? :-\
Things are a bit different for booze (and fags) when it comes to Customs etc.
Way it works is you can bring in any amount (for personal consumption) from another EU country without charge if you've paid the local taxes in that country. However, you MUST accompany the goods in person. Effectively, you have to bring them in yourself in a car or van.
It's legal to order (online / post) from another European country. However, the company sending booze to you must be registered with Irish Revenue and pay excise and VAT on the shipment to Revenue in advance of shipping, and the goods must be accompanied by documentation stating this. In this instance, you do not need to pay local taxes in the country of origin.
I know of no online booze retailer shipping to Ireland who are actually registered with Revenue though. Many of them make claims that it's all legit etc - it's not. If Customs catch the stuff coming in, I believe the official line is to destroy it but have heard of them allowing people to pay the tax due and receive the shipment. Any tax you have paid in the origin country will not be allowed against your bill - you will have to pay the full Irish excise and VAT and it's your problem to get a refund from the seller.
In practicality, very little is caught and there is booze flying in every day. Believe me I know! It's getting very popular now though, and I expect Customs to clamp down on it.
You put it exactly as I read it too. I have a revenue friend ??? and he said the same as this. :(
EU free trade me arse then. Same crap with VRT. It's things like this I wish the EU should be enshrining as a right proper free trade not dictating how straight a carrot has to be ☺
Sure if it was that easy to get cheap beer everyone would be doing it.
If you want cheap booze you need to get the ferry or you can brew it yourself.
true but nice kick in the arse for government
Don't say it too loudly or they'll start taxing the raw ingredients.
You know, stuff like malt, water... Oh wait...
Not wishing to start a debate, but some factors that have us paying assorted and excessive taxes to revenue...
The scale of the economy
Successively corrupt governments and politicians (Take your pick)
Mismanaged national Finance, uninformed decision makers (Think Bertie and Brian Lenihan)
Corrupt citizens (Black marketeers, scroungers etc.)
In short, make sure your trip to Benelux is a camper or an estate car and pack it to the gills!
thank god I'm enjoying this brewing at home then. First time ever the other night had a choice of beers in the fridge, I chose one onf my own brewed :). Should get a shipping update today, will let you know if the gift sets arrive or not !!
It's the best reason in the world to get your beer skills up to pub standard. You can forego the expensive stuff in the shop, and decent doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg if you made it yourself.
In Ireland there is a huge gap between the bargain beer and macro beer level of beer prices, and the stuff that is actually good. There is price middle ground but it is only filled with "world lagers".
In the uk there is a proper continuity of prices, with genuinely good beers in the middle price ground.
There are a lot if online retailers in the uk, but they sell domestically. They are not value resellers really; mostly they just spread beers around the country that are otherwise hard or impossible to get in your locality.
Just to update all, received my order this afternoon, all very well packaged, 3 large boxes with the gift sets 7 lots in total, very happy, some lovely glasses, and hopefull a couple of nice unusual brews too
Any word from our friends in revenue?
Watching as well :)
Not a dickie bird so happy out

Mine came today too, I had it sent to the parents house so won't get my hands on it until the weekend. All was very straightforward same as any other parcel.

Same here, I used the French crowd, in your face govt.
Coming on here telling about how you've managed to avoid paying the authorities the duty isn't really a clever thing to do. Remember, this is a public forum so what you post here is available for anybody to read.
Yeah, I'd say the excise duty lads go looking for tax evaders on forums. I hear they put transmitters in your fillings as well.
I'm expecting the door to be bust in any minute

It's ok, I have my house rigged with explosives and anthrax should they attempt a raid.
Aah here now that you mentioned anthrax the CIA flags will have gone off so we can expect a jump in site traffic >:D
