A Bit of fun for a Thursday and first right answer gets a Festival Premium Ale, Old Suffolk Strong Ale delivered free to their door.

Just answer the question to be in with a chance to win:

A woman has 3 kids under 10 years of age all of whom have had a birthday this year. When you multiply their ages together you get 224. Next year after they all have had a birthday when you multiply their ages together you will get 360. What age will all 3 kids be next year.

Best of luck Ian.

I have been looking at alternatives to Starsan and came across a product called Steroxal which is used in dairy and brewing for cleaning equipment. This products sterilises and cleans and basically turn back to water (non rinse ) is this something you would be interested?

It is a concentrate of 60ml per 45 litres of water so would be great value for money.

I personally think Starsan Is over Rated what do you think ?
Title: Re: [Homebrew Shop] The Mottly Brew
Post by: pob on August 18, 2015, 05:39:23 PM
Bit of a vague question.

Overrated, do you mean,
... it doesn't work as described?
... it's too expensive?
... it's high level of sanitisation is not required by us?

A lot of people use the (diluted) bleach/vinegar mix & swear by it. Others have looked into alternatives which they have gone with or tried and moved on. StarSan is used by others who like the convenience of it's no rinse properties.

What are you trying to establish? Have you sourced a viable alternative?

There doesn't appear to be much information on product you mentioned above, in relation to brewing, it would appear to be a mainly veterinary product.

'Steroxal is a 5% peracetic acid for cattle and sheep and is a strong disinfectant. Steroxal can be used for a variety of applications including routine animal house disinfection. Its main use is as a foot bath. This product is cost effective and can be used for flushing, soaking, pressure-washing and fogging.' http://www.carechemsupplies.com/content/steroxal (http://www.carechemsupplies.com/content/steroxal)

It is also used by breweries
because it breaks down to Co2 and water and is fragrant free.
It was only a suggestion as a alternative I researched several other products similiar if
Anybody is interested?

I'm open to starsan alternatives but personally would be slow to buy something unless there's good info out there on it and how it compares, along with some people in the know who can vouch for it. Otherwise it's not worth the saving of a few euro to risk screwing up a batch, or worse.

I'm a big fan of Starsan. It's a quality product that doesn't let you down. A bottle of the stuff lasts me years and I don't see the issue with cost unless you are brewing industrial quantities each year.

The main issue with it is it can sometimes be out of stock or hard to get over here. Also I don't know how you guys are stretching bottles out over a year or more! I use a spray bottle for general use but still have to make up a few litres anytime I need to properly sanitise my siphon and kegs.

Post by: molc on August 19, 2015, 02:05:44 PM
I've been using the same bottle since I started brewing, so 18 months. I just make up a mix with 5 L in RO water and reuse that until there's too much stuff floating in it. Use a oh pen to make sure it's always below 3 before each use and, at least so far, haven't had any infections. I do also use oxi to clean everything first, so it's just a cold side blast to sanatise.
Title: Re: [Homebrew Shop] The Mottly Brew
Post by: Jonnycheech on August 21, 2015, 10:13:58 AM
I think i bought a litre of Starsan about a year ago, could be longer, and I still have more than half of the bottle left. I've probably done about 15 brews in that time, maybe more.

I make up 5 litres at a time, which is about 7.5mls in water I think, and I don't reuse it. If I'm cleaning a keg I do a few rinses with hot water first and then sanitise with maybe 1 litre of SS. I just close the keg and give it a good swirl for a few minutes. I've never had any issues with keg infection.

I know there are cheaper options out there but I'm happy with it.

Not bad for someone less then 2 yrs in business!

Next year we promise more hops, more grains, more wine kits, more yeasts onwards and upwards.

Best of luck to everyone in 2016.

We have just taken delivery of a non rinse steriliser OXY - P15 this is a safe non rinse steriliser used by the brewing industry for cleaning lines. This is made in Ireland and has a dilution rate of 1:400 or 2.5ml per litre. It can be used in spray bottles the same as Starsan and is great value at just €9.00 per litre. It will be available from tomorrow instore and online.

http://themottlybrew.ie/product/oxi-p15/ Link for new steriliser no need to search far and wide for starsan and pay silly prices.

There has been a lot of talk of making beer from old bread recently so for our next brew day on 14th of Feb we are going to try it. My next door neighbour is a baker so getting old bread won't be a problem my main concern is bread yeast and ale yeast mixed causing off flavours.  I wonder would adding campden tablets for 2-3 days to  kill off the bread yeast and then mash as normal.

I would appreciate your help in any way with any ideas how to do this and invite you all to come along and help. I have an idea how to do this but could be totally wrong. It could be the next big thing in Ireland OB IPA

Hi Ian,

Lovely idea, especially if your neighbours a baker - very eco friendly!  :)

There's some guidance on the 'Mad Fermentalist' site about making beer from bread (see links below), and if you Google 'Kvass' you may come up with more detailed info. The good tip in selecting the bread used is to choose one that's low in oils/fats and salt/preservatives.

Other than that the bread will be 'mashed' and added to wort. My thinking is that the bread yeast will be killed in the boil afterwards, and I understand this will provide further nutrients for your ale yeast.

Happy brewing, hope it all goes well, Paul.

We will have Co2 regulators from Wednesday not cheap Asian crap as sold on other sites proper industry standard Co2 regulators from a reputable Irish supplier. Co2 cylinders 10kg within the next month with proper valves ( not used for putting out fires ) refill also available on a swap basis. Corny kegs connections, beer line and taps all ordered and on the way.

Our American hops will be here from the end of Feb also from an Irish suppliers ( yes you can get American hops in Ireland). We still have our 50 plus speciality malts and loughran family pale and lager malt. Our mash kits are still €19.95 up to 6kg of malt and up to 100g of hops you decide the beer style. We are still doing the email and collect for your own recipes ( info@themottlybrew.ie ) so no need to order per kg.

Our non rinse steriliser is selling like hot cakes but lets face it it is €20 plus cheaper then Starsan and does the same job.

We are the only shop in Ireland to do a free all grain demo once a month with free tea, coffee and bring your own samples.

We pride ourselves on customer service and being a retail shop for customers to come and talk about home brewing and any problems they might have rather then being referred to you tube to find out for themselves.  Which happens a lot believe me and I have gained many customers from it !

All homebrew clubs are welcome to use our premises for meetings or brew demos pm me or email to arrange.

Last and not least I will be in Altech Sunday if any one  is around for a pint or 6 ;)

Lads apologies about the late reply our deal on the 10kg cylinders went sour because the company we were buying from got taken over. I have done a deal with another crowd so we will have 2.5kg cylinders from tomorrow for €45 and refill swaps for €15. I am also getting the regulators Monday.

Our hops are ordered but are coming direct from USA so will be here in about 10 days. I have also purchased a chamber vac packer so all hops will be vac packed seal for ultimate freshness.

The Bread experiment went horribly wrong won't be trying that again!

Our grain is back up to full stock we sell quite a lot to a local brewery so have increased our stocks to cover the extra sales.

Its our birthday today 2 yrs in business and growing everyday thanks to all NHC members for their custom and making us the most successful HBS Dublin has ever seen.

I'm sure it is, in fact, I think for an affiliate the NHC could post these fraudsters images or video on facebook and twitter as well if you can email it to any one of the committee.

What did the Guards say? Any other attempted cases, don't these guys usually go after a couple of locations ?

Number 3 in the Guards lives just across the road from me, he's like that cop that's the boss in Blue Bloods and knows everything about everyone,  I'm sure he would get things moving along for you if I asked he's good like that and he likes my homebrew :)

This will help us keep up our freshly milled service which we are the only ones to provide.

Thanks for your help

That's great. One thing though; I know from visiting the store you have Minch and Chateau, but from looking at the web site, I wouldn't think you do anything other than Weyermann. You're losing a lot of online custom by not having information up there, as we'll just trundle on to the stores where we can see stock levels and ignore yours...

Hi All,

Due to popular demand and the fact that I haven't done one since Jan and I have extra staff now I will be doing an all grain brew demonstration this Saturday from 12 - 5 pm. If you want to find out how easy it is to do all grain brewing please come along and bring a friend or 2. Refreshments will be provided and snacks.

I am going to use The Fast Ferment to ferment this batch just to show how it cuts down on having to use a secondary and makes it easier to Recycle your yeast.

Mangrove Jacks have a supplier for their products with quick turnaround order times. We will have Mangrove jacks yeast in stock from tomorrow on and Mangrove jacks cider and beer kits very similar to other Craft beer kits on the market at the moment.

Turbo yeast also available from tomorrow onwards.

Well I represented all HBS today in Wicklow Brewery today. A great day was had by all. It was great as always to see Loughran Family malts and Castle malts great things going on there in the near future which is good for all of us. Hopsteiner gave a speech on why hops are so scarce this year and new substitutes for some favourites. When you here it from the horses mouth it makes sense. Altech did a great speech on yeast and how yeast work and how to get the best out of your yeast. I was well educated on latest things going on in the brewing industry.

For anyone looking for weekend away spot I can highly recommend Redcross it's a lovely little spot with great beer.

Great day out great to have staff to mind the empire while I'm away :)

Hi all,

I'd just like to say thanks for your support over the last 2 and 1/2 years because of you we are still Dublin's biggest and best homebrew shop. We unlike others didn't start in the living room of a house we had a small shop moving onto a bigger shop. We have now out grown our second shop and are moving to new bigger premises with better parking facilities from the start of August. The shop is only around the corner from where we are now but it is a much better location.

We will have opening day offers, music, BBQ and a few drinks  on the day date to be confirmed.

I know this might upset some people and delight others. We are now officially Hambleton Bard retail and wholesale agents. We have patched up our differences and with new blood in HB things are changing for the good of all of us.

Our GMO free speciality grains are always in stock and as we deal with numerous craft breweries so are always fresh. We have heard horror stories lately of grains being as old as 2014 crop being sold as fresh. Always ask for best before dates. We have the Bull Dog brewer on the way and will be doing demonstrations shortly.

Really delighted with the service from HB and looking forward to stocking many more products.

I was reading your kind words elsewhere and yes I have put in a lot of hours and long weekends, early mornings collecting stock ( not from them you joking  ;) ) and being in business is not 9 - 5. I often start my day at 7 even though I open the shop at 9.30. I think most of you are aware by now we have moved to bigger premises which has loads of off street parking with no clampers looking for their Christmas bonus you were warned be careful.

I have just restocked all my grain our grain is on public view (never pre crushed with best before dates available ) and always fresh as we deal with a local brewery near us.

We have added Mosaic, Centinnel, Cascade, and Simcoe to our hop range this week also wheat Munich 15 and wheat Munich 25.

Some people think I take Mondays off ! I use Mondays to do my banking collecting from my local suppliers which I use as much as possible fortunately being in Dublin a lot of things are on my door step brewing wise. The shop is still open 9.30 - 5.30 as we cannot afford to be closed and lose a valued customer.

I am hoping to be opening Sundays in the near future running up to Christmas just need to sort staffing issues my misses will boot me out if I suggest working 7 days a week.

Having mentioned Christmas its coming upon us very quickly if you want to send us your all grain recipes by email, text message or social media please do and we can put them together for you save you waiting in store for it to be weighed and crushed.

We met with Bairds Malt yesterday and having heard great feed back from brewers all over the country we will now be adding Marris Otter, brown, whole oats, torrified wheat, light crystal, medium crystal, dark crystal, pilsen and few more malts to our already big range.

Just a friendly suggestion to look at online ordering with current stock levels vs phoning or emailing. It's so easy to fill our what we want online, that a lot of us won't be giving you custom if it comes to those options.

Our unique selling point is to be able to come in choose your grains and have them milled in front of you. No other shops are offering this service. All our grains are on display never precrushed and always fresh because we deal with breweries around Dublin.

So its been rumoured  that we are closing down I can tell you now we are not! We will be diversifying in the new year probably getting rid of our fresh grain and hops as sales have declined dramatically in the last year. We will be focusing more on just extract kit sales and bringing in more related products. We do need your support to keep a homebrew shop in Dublin or we will just fail like all the others over the last few years. Its up to the member to show us you want a shop in Dublin and give us the support to grow or we will just go down another line and stop selling homebrew product altogether let me know your thoughts. Ian

Where were the rumours coming from?  :)

Personally I'm interested in buying 25kg bags of base grain, smaller quantities of speciality grain and adjuncts, hops and interesting yeast. Maybe some Spraymalt for starters. I like the idea of being able to drive over and pick up the stuff I need and maybe stuff I don't need because I'm in the shop and like the look of stuff. I'd say there's enough room in the market for another big HB shop but the range and prices needs to be on par with your competitors or stocking products they don't supply. I think a big Dublin based shop could charge a small premium but being b & m will only get you so far. You need the product to get people in and you need to compete.
I've driven over and gotten stuff I wanted from you in the past but I don't think extract kits are enough to get people in the door.

Maybe up online sales as well and aim for some of the business outside the Dublin area.

Getting rid of the grain and hops could be a mistake.

Update the website, grow online sales outside Dublin and Ireland.

Organise Homebrew Comps and/or beer tastings.
If you lose the grain/hops you could lose customers.

Title: Re: [Homebrew Shop] The Mottly Brew
Post by: pob on November 28, 2017, 07:53:26 PM
I've often looked to head over to you to pick something up, to get the ingredients to build a recipe; but when I go on the website to see if you have it in stock or for a rough guide on the price, it is not very easy to find associated items in the place you'd expect them to be. I'm not going to spend 1.5 hrs driving to get there, if I don't expect to be able to pick everything up, I can already pay €5.75 delivery charge to my door knowing the order's complete.

On the website, it can be frustrating to try and find certain items, e.g. yeast. There are none listed in the Sugar/Malt/Yeast section where you might expect them. Looking for then using the Search facility brings up a long list, more like a blog with large images, it doesn't look like its the place to get it. Then when I persevered, I found them 3 pages into the Brewing Equipment section  :o

One reason that the Hop sales might have dropped off is that, you do not have consistent enough info listed on them, e.g. AA%, profile, some pricing looks out of kilter with your competition (appreciate a shop in Dublin has much higher overheads than one outside it, but a 100% increase doesn't sit right). Some of them also look to be be very old, 3 of them are 2015 harvest - we are seeing some 2017 hops in stock already & the images of the Cascade and Columbus don't look very vacuum packed (bags actually look inflated). It may be just that the descriptions need updating, but when your web presence isn't pristine, your business can be overlooked.

A small bit of time & effort in tidying this might improve business. It would certainly increase my chances of getting over to you & seeing other items in the shop that I wasn't originally looking for.

Wishing you well & hoping you continue to sell homebrew supplies.

Ian, please have a re-think on the grain. Get a proper system for storing hops, and stop selling 2015 hops, if they aren't shifting, de-list them. And finally, look into a much wider yeast range.

Serious home brewers (75%+ of this website) want these products, and you cannot rely on the "kit" market for ever, everyone who gets good at kits eventually looks to move on to extract and all grain brewing - if you can encourage that then  you'll have and keep customers for the lifetime of their brewing.

Just to echo what others are saying, this will only work with a proper website and online presence though. Bricks and Morter shops just can't compete in this market, nor would I argue are a viable business unless a strong online shop is backing it up.

I'd love to be able to drive over on a Saturday and pick up 25 kg bags of base grain, but without the freshness and stock churn that comes from running a constantly cycling inventory, it won't happen.

Bricks and Mortar means nothing to anyone outside Dublin (Mountmellick and Galway excepted)
Web all the way.

A little planning and a fiver or so delivery to my door makes sense - Even for lads in Dublin it saves you dicking around in traffic.

I used to call in to the shop for everything when i started but as I progressed from kits to All grain i found it harder and harder to get what I wanted and found my self going online to get fresh hops and liquid yeast's and it didn't make sense to make the trip in store just to get grain when I could add it to my online order.
Carry just kits is fine in short term but I'm sure a lot of people will be like be and move on from kits and find them self's looking to online suppliers.

I'm a bit confused to be honest. Are you using your homebrew shop channel to ridicule a NHC member and antagonise potential customers in the process ? Not the smartest move that you'd expect from a business man.

Folks,

This is a reminder that the intention of this forum is for brewers to share ideas, tips, etc, as well as buy and sell home brewing kit, amongst many other things.

What this forum is NOT is some kind of pub car park where grievances from other social media are allowed to spill out.

Ian: in the context of this forum, your video was helpful, thanks. Your follow up comments, however, where you *appear* to slam an ad placed by a fellow forum member are not in the spirit of the NHC.

Every member has a right to offer kit for sale. Other members can decide for themselves if the price is right, and vote with their wallets, or maybe even offer some friendly advice(?)

Come on guys; only 2 more days till we get opening our Easter eggs. Don't fall apart on us now....

Thanks,

-Barry

Is the Mottley Brew shop still open for business?
Twitter (https://twitter.com/Themottlybrew/status/976559477439827969) suggests otherwise, and the website (http://themottlybrew.ie/) has been disabled.

Sorry Barry but the abusive language I received from a member was uncalled for and not  for the first time. The video posted is an information video if you want to use the information please do if you don't then don't!

Our aim is discuss all things brewing and health and safety should be a part of that. All in one systems have one element for a reason.
