Title: Three Stage Water Filtration Unit.
Post by: Greg2013 on April 01, 2015, 11:07:38 AM
I purchased this exact unit below last year along with the tap assembly and all tubing and connectors etc,i installed it between the existing taps on the kitchen sink and it has made such a difference to the drinking(and brewing) water quality. However the first foam filter thingy is absolutely minging now,in fact it is yellow in colour due to the quality of the incoming water.I had not expected to have to replace it until 12 months use was up but it has got too bad now so i need to get a new one. ;D

Is there anywhere handy here online that sells these cartridge filters at a decent price(like a tenner a piece or less) or am i better off going back to ebay ? ;D

I removed the other identical post  ;)

I'm thinking of getting a filter myself. Do these reduce the water flow much?

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question  :(

No worries i just put it in SE section in case any of the locals could help ;D No lucikly enough it has not reduced the water pressure for me,however that is very dependant on the water pressure coming into the house, luckily for me i was able to install it in the kitchen sink so i am getting the full incoming pressure,it is a pencil thin flow however it fills a tea kettle in seconds so plenty really,i was willing to sacrifice some flow for better quality water anyhow, the way i have it setup i can still use the normal cold water tap in the kitchen sink however fill a bucket and it comes out yellow(i kid you not). ;D

1 micron (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/5-Pack-of-1-Micron-Beer-Filters-PP-Filter-Supplies-Remove-all-yeast-and-most-haze/436381_2052434798.html) 5 micron (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Water-Purifier-Filter-5-Micron-PP-Filter-Sediment-Water-Filter-Cartridge-homebrew-filter-supplies-removing-yeast/436381_2052450387.html) any good?

I believe the first filter that i need to replace is 5 micron however i wonder how a 1 micron would work ? My incoming water is that bad i might consider going to a smaller micron first stage filter.

Another thing i am looking for is a standalone filter housing setup like the first stage filter,i have the barbed connectors for same already, thinking beer filtration if i can get one cheap with say a 5 micron filter in. ;D

I wonder are they the same size as what i need though ? :-\

I might go that route if i can't get the same here,it would be handy at those prices to stock up and be able to change the filter more regularily allright. ;D

Found it i reckon ? ;D

I wonder though would i be better using the 5 micron fiter as it came with or should i go with a smaller 1 micron as a sediment filter before the carbon stage Garry ? ;D

I bought filters recently from waterfilterireland.com
Hogan is the name, based in Adare, Limerick.
There site is down now it seems,  but very helpful, reasonable pricing and local too.

Sorry for sidetracking post, but ...

Have I just found a refillable unit to convert it to a Hop Randall - www.thewaterfiltermen.co.uk (http://www.thewaterfiltermen.co.uk/10-inch-Refillable-Water-Filter-Cartridge/) for €8.41?

The sediment filters should be cheap; the carbon block filter especially if it's pressure-created and not construded will be the expensive filter to replace and it's the one doing the work.

-You want the sediment filter to be at least as small as the smallest micron carbon block filter to avoid clogging the expensive filters.   You can think of the sediment filter as a sacrificial filter that gets clogged instead of the expensive carbon block filter.

-I'd shoot the seller an email and ask them about the micron rating of the 2 carbon filters and make sure that the sediment filter is the same or smaller rating; smaller will restrict the rate of flow.

If you have to deal with chlorinated water don't forget to flow at 0.5 gallons per minute (about 2 liters per minute) or slower otherwise you won't be neutralizing all the chlorine.

Yes tracking down the two types of carbon filters will be infinitely more difficult and expensive i expect, atm i only need the initial coarse filter but by the end of the year i will need the others also.I am going to get a single coarse filter somewhere here and put in an order with those links Mreindl posted above for reserves. ;D

Well the current first stage coarse filter is 5 micron but i just ordered a 1 micron version as replacement as i believe i need a finer first stage than the 5 micron filter i currently have, the next two are carbon filters so i will not be replacing them for another while.  ;D

I thought you'd be better off 5 - 1 - carbon, the 1 as the first stage won't last all that long

It's only a three stage and the second two are already carbon. ;D Would i be better replacing one of the carbon filters with a finer mesh filter and just leave the third carbon block filter as is you think? :)
