Title: best place for taps?
Post by: dcalnan on April 09, 2015, 12:34:25 PM
I had to take off my tap again yesterday to clean it as it had seized from not using it for a while. And Ive decided I've had enough and need to get forward sealing taps. Where do people get theirs from. I'm thinking of getting two, should I go the Chinese route or america?

I got some Perlicks from america. I think they were the 650ss. They're very nice and the forward seal is a pleasure to use. I was lucky to have one of my mates coming back from the US so shipping was not an issue but it can be hefty if you go this route. I got mine form Kegworks and they offer international shipping rates at checkout.

Hey Q do you have a name/link for the seller you purchased from? I hear Aliexpress can be hit and miss and that it's good to have a reliable go to seller. I've been close to buying before but heard horror stories

Nice one! I was thinking of Alibaba, I didn't know about Aliexpress...this is dangerous, my Grainfather savings might dissipate!

I was trying to decide between perlicks and ali perlicks and did some research. I cant remember where I readit but I heard the Ali ones leak, even some of the reviews on the site mentioned this I believe. I decided that is rather spend double on proper stainless steel and have the longevity with the real perlicks. This can save some major headaches down the line.

Are perlicks the best taps? Looking at adding a third tap right now, but want to get something decent, that ideally will pour a good stout. Also want something that can be fully taken apart for servicing.

I came across this one on My Beer and Wine (http://www.mybeerandwine.ie/beer-taps/153--beer-tap-with-disconnect-and-beer-line-.html), might be worth a look?

That aliexpress store seems to have proper stainless perlick knock offs now not just the chrome plated. They also have the exact same one as mybeerandwine.

Actually, I took another look at the taps from CanDirect and I'd say their design is pretty close to Perlicks. It's also got flow control and a creamer function. The only thing missing is being able to slip the bottling attachment up the nozzle, but if you un-thread that, it might also be possible...

One of mine is blocked with hops right now and I've never taken it apart, so will give it a try when I get home and see how it goes:

The perlicks seem to be easy to take apart but I haven't done it yet. As far as best, I don't know, but all the Americans seems happy with them. I looked at all the review on northern brewer, keg connection etc and it seems that these were the most consistent and least likely to fail or get stuck.

The black plastic spout comes off that tap fairly easily. I've two like that and they're good taps. Easy to disassemble and clean too.

Took the tap apart and here's a pic. Pretty easy to service. Don't know if it's of any use to you guys in considering taps but at least now you can see the innards

Molc the top JG fitting there that goes onto to the shank, you wouldn't happen to know exactly what part that is would you, being that you ordered them and that. I need two (should have just got those taps with the GB  :( )

5/8" Shank on the taps we got (check your own to see if they are the same), so this is the adaptor:

I can totally see someone getting stopped by customs for having 20 taps in their luggage when they come back from the states. I can't find any European retailer that sells them at a reasonable price, so I'll have to wait, mine is similar to the one above its a celli tap and all metal, havent taken it apart fully but I should do it before my next beer, have to clean out my keezer completely as it has a bad mould problem.

Put you name down on the keg group buy so they know to include it in the initial quotes.

How did you get on with your ali perlicks at all Qs?

Just found an Irish site for those john guest disconnects http://www.cateringparts.ie/Products/STRAIGHT-FITTING-JG-PI451215FS__3349193.aspx (http://www.cateringparts.ie/Products/STRAIGHT-FITTING-JG-PI451215FS__3349193.aspx) Might make sense that one person order a few and bring them along to brewcon on Saturday, its a flat delivery of €10 or maybe somone could collect directly?

Haven't fitted them yet. Waiting on the JG fittings at the moment. I'll update when they're sorted.

I see that they have an absolutely beautiful tap available for €122, I've lost the link to it on their site but here's info from the manafacturer

http://en.celli.com/products/fc4-beertap-with-compensator-st-steel_129.html

I'm a firm believer of buying quality so I only have to buy once but €122 is a silly amount of money! There's some taps on candirect that are apparently all Stainless steel for 85ish I think, I don't want one of the coated brass jobs that the Irish sites have for sale so I'll probably risk one of the fake perlicks from aliexpress unless I get some free taps from a publican that do the job.

Seems like you need to pay around that for a two tap tower...just looking at Aliexpress (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Triple-Faucet-Snake-Font-Cobra-Triple-Tap-Flooded-Font-Chrome-Plated-Brass-for-European-Flow-Control/1017341_2021803892.html - add import tax and taps to this )and the german sites (http://www.candirect.de/Schanksaeulen_s2)
