Gauging interest in a brew day in Blacks over the Summer.
I was chatting with Sam today - his 200l pilot brewery has landed minus a few pieces.
He has invited the Rebel Brewers out for a brew day over the Summer.
The rough idea is...
Minibus from the City.
Brewday, possibly BBQ, probaby beer.
We should be able to make about 180l batch.
Split this and ferment with different yeasts and when ready we meet and compare the resulting beers.
Looking like June 13th

I'm interested. It would be easier for me to drive to Kinsale though. So don't count me as a bus seat.

Ok if I head too? I met Sam last year at the brewery. I Haven't met any of you yet though. With 2 small kids I can't leave the house- which is why I got so into the brewing..

I think it's time to let it retire in peace.
It looks like it will be no bother to get a fresh whikey barrel when we're ready :)
I'm hoping you could hear me firmly planting my tongue into my cheek... :D
The sarcasm was wasted on me.
I thought you were working your way through our dark sour lager and getting a taste of more!
My bad, I should know better by now... Lol
You'll have to let me know how your batch matures, I still haven't dumped mine either. If it's not too hard on the bowels and still has alcohol in it I might still get through it!
I'm going to bottle it, cellar it and age it. Let's see what happens.
I'll tag along too if no one minds. I'm fairly close to kinsale so I wont be on the bus
i would be up for this , not too far from kinsail ,what sort of time of day would we be talking ? i dont get up until 11 O0
Put your names on the list lads.

We'll have to start thinking of what to brew, I can make some of my beer brined ribs for the day.
A hoppy US amber. Nothing too big just because you can.
I'll check with Sam to see how we're looking.
As for dates, we will have to row in with Sam's schedule.
Bodies, I think we're ok, again I'll curl with Sam.
To spice things up we could have everyone should bring their A-game BBQ dish, salad or dessert.
What say ye?
That sounds perfect. I was going to suggest a nice hoppy easy drinker and a hoppy american amber/red sounds the job for summer.
BBQ all the way
Let me tie in with Sam to get a few answers.
Start thinking about food - Everybody brings one dish.
A Starter, Main, Side or Dessert
Sounds good.

Hi John + gang
I just recently joined the NHC.
Please add my name to the list for the trip to Blacks. Looking forward to it.

I have 8 for the bus, we may as well get a taxi from City Centre at that.
Either that or a couple of lads can abstain from liquor.
How much is bus / taxi?
I started checking but work got in the way.
It will be Tuesday before I get a chance to look again.
If you need me to help with anything, I'm free all the time atm.
8 Seater minibus is EUR50 each way, so EUR100
So bring EUR15 (in case it goes over)
From Penrose Quay (I can provide all day free parking if needed)

We are going to need to bring 10 cornys.
They will be light going but heavy coming back.
May need to have a driver cart and dump these.
Public Transport:
The alternative is bus eireann...
http://www.buseireann.ie/pdf/1423737238-226.pdf
Out:Parnell Place to Pier road, Quayside from 6:05 hourly, approx 50 mins.
Return:Pier Road, Amenity to Parnell Place hourly up to 23:00, approx 50 mins.
EUR12.16 return
Driving:
We could go with a couple of drivers - We are not committed to minibus at this stage.
Put me down as a driver. I could manage 3 passengers and 4 cornies. Any more and she'll bottom out.
Living out in the shticks...
Sure, the view is only grand!
We need to start thinking about the BBQ too.
What times were you thinking for the bus?
Do we have any bbq experts?
At the risk of asking a stupid question - are we to bring a corny each ourselves or where are they coming from?
I stopped believing in the Corny Fairy a long time ago...
We need about 10 cornies.
I have some surplus, and will sanitize and so on.
The deal is to brew 200I, drop it into 10 cornies, fermented potentially 10 different ways.
Have we a recipe? Need to make sure we have a recipe.
A Palm clone would be nice...
I still think Amber is a solid middle of road beer.
As for bus, seeing as we're so scattered, cars are the only good option. Feck it.
Grand I'll bring one along so..
Make sure cornies are cleaned sanitised!
We need to get the food started.
1. Johnrm - Burgers.
Need more mains, sides, salads, desserts.
You cannot turn up empty handed!
I'm sure we have a rake of spiderman plates, plastic knives & forks etc left over from a recent birthday bash. I'll bring those along. I'll bring the carbs (bread, buns, crackers..) and condiments (ketchup, mustard, hummus..).
1. Johnrm - Burgers.
2. Garry - Carbs, condiments & crockery!
I have to pullout. Herself is working that weekend.... :'(

Couple of questions about recipe:
Is this the recipe you were thinking of?
I'd sort of assumed you were doing a regular size batch based on this recipe. What does it look like scaled up to 200 litres - particularly the hops?
Have you brewed this recipe (just to be 100% clear) / where did you source it from? If not, what about your Proper Job clone?
What system are we using?
What's the efficiency?
Where are the ingredients coming from?
Does the recipe need to be rejigged to reflect the available ingredients?
Is everyone ok with Willamette and Fuggles?
Also, if we are taking this away to ferment presumably a better bottle would be as good as / better than a corny?
1. Johnrm - Burgers.
2. Garry - Carbs, condiments & crockery!
3. Mac780 - sausages
4. mr hoppy - chickens, bbq sauce, coleslaw (maybe), corn muffins (maybe)
Well, I did say to pick holes...
Is this the recipe you were thinking of? Thinking of, yes.
I'd sort of assumed you were doing a regular size batch based on this recipe. What does it look like scaled up to 200 litres - particularly the hops? Bigger, much bigger.
Have you brewed this recipe (just to be 100% clear) / where did you source it from? If not, what about your Proper Job clone? Yes, made it up. PJ would be fine too, in fact I quite like PJ, Feck it lets do PJ!
What system are we using? Sams 200l pilot Home Brew Builder system.
What's the efficiency? I'll ask Sam
Where are the ingredients coming from? Let me check recipe first. I will come back
Does the recipe need to be rejigged to reflect the available ingredients? Probably.
Is everyone ok with Willamette and Fuggles? I am although Fuggles is struggling in the UK.
Also, if we are taking this away to ferment presumably a better bottle would be as good as / better than a corny? Should be fine, anything vessel that will seal.
I will dig out my recipe for 'The Right Job'
Also, if we are taking this away to ferment presumably a better bottle would be as good as / better than a corny?
[/quote]
Would fermentation buckets not be better?
I still have flashbacks of heading to Garrys and back with fermenters full of beer in the boot.
See this happy lady I once met enroute. 'No Speak Ingles' is all she said...
Don't mind her; she's harmless :P
That right job was just short of winning a medal so I'd say it would be a great option.
If we are using Sam's system (sounds pretty cool) should definitely get his input on hop utilisation.
What kind of bbq is it do we know?
Gas BBQ. Let me grab a beer and then dig out my recipe.

2. Garry - Carbs, condiments & crockery!
3. Mac780 - sausages

I suggest punching this into Beersmith and tweaking.
For me, for an English IPA, the OG and colour is a tad low, IBUs too high.
Look below for the 200l batch.
Sam will cover the Pale Ale and Yeast.
I have the Munich and Caramunich II (It will do)
Also needed...
200g Cascade
300g Columbus (or any CTZ or Chinook)
300g Fuggles (or Willamette)
I will check tomorrow to see what I have hop-wise

I'll be putting in my order to the hbc for my yeast tomorrow so I can get some stuff If we don't have enough. I have 100g leaf of cascade and 100g of willamette pellets.
Recipe looks nice, I'm just dry Hopping my own English ipa as well.
i have 50g cascade pellet. only opened last week
I have the hops too.
Only 200g/300g Columbus, substitute Marynka
Marynka for the Bittering addition will be fine.
Are we ok so or do we need to buy more? I will chip in or can order some if necessary.
I probably have a few spare corneys if anyone is interested? €40.
I think we're ok for ingredients, thanks lads.
I don't know how it works at 200 litres but I know that Phil from Mountainy Man said you have to be careful when scaling up home brew recipes because hop utilisation is better on bigger systems. Might be worth checking with Sam?
I texted Sam.
As I understand, there is no one rule, so aim for hoppy and pull back 10%
Perfect. Very scientific too. ;D
1. Johnrm - Burgers & Seriously hot sauce.
2. Garry - Carbs, condiments & crockery!
3. Mac780 - sausages
4. mr hoppy - chickens, bbq sauce, coleslaw (maybe), corn muffins (maybe)
5. dcalnan - ribs, stout mashed potatoes and I could do a dessert. And I have a spare corny
6. Drum - Banana cake. Homemade chilli burgers or shop bought peppered grillsteaks depending on time.
Im assuming its ok to bring homebrew aswell? As it will be the first time I'll meet most of ye Im looking forward to getting feedback on my beers from other brewers so im gonna start a beer list
Drum - Reddish black IPA. 'The other full Irish' single malt IPA with loughran malt and american hops.
I've another idea aswell, dunno if anyone will go for this but what about taking some of the second runnings from this brew and having a few of us use them as a base for entries to the capital brewers summer session beer comp?
I'd be happy to take a shot at the second runnings and let the fully fledged Rebel brewers handle the big batch.
Anything goes!

Does anyone know what time we are expected to arrive at Blacks?
I will go straight there myself as I intend to visit family in Kinsale after we are finished, and so will not be coming back until quite late or I might decide to stay overnight.
Not a problem Eamon.
Waiting for a response from Sam, I'll post here when I know.
We'll meet him Wednesday anyway.

Bacon Explosion
I was reading about that last night. Heart-attack on a plate!
The rest of the menu isn't exactly a Weight Watchers special ;D
I was waiting to see what niche needed to be filled.
I was speaking with Sam just now.
Kick off at 10:00
BBQ on Coal if the weather is good.
If its wet we have access to a Gas rig.
The volume will likely be around 180l
Aiming to finish at about 15:00
Updating the list with the people with no internet or do not frequent the forum much!
Also, I'm changing my burgers...
1. Johnrm - Roquefort Burgers & Seriously hot sauce.

Anyone bringing Lettuce, Onion Tomato?
I guess someone has to bring some healthy food, the keg I was going to bring needs some tlc the next few days if it's going to be used. Won't be bringing mash anymore, so a potato salad instead.

Mr hoppy - don't worry about the coleslaw, I need to make some for the pulled pork. There'll be plenty extra for sides.
There is an actual BBQ in Sam's, right?
Sam mentioned there was (or someone was bringing?) a charcoal grill. If the weather turns I can bring my gas grill. I'm just up the road.
Hope it's not too late to add one more. He was uncertain until today whether he would be able to make it due to work commitments. He may have to leave early.

There was 15 bodies (from earlier list), we really need to cap this as I said 10 roughly to Sam at the outset and this could be a bit of a health and safety nightmare for him.

Jeez lads that bacon looks awesome. Would love to be there for that. Is it just bacon or is there something else inside the wrap :)
Imagine a Swiss Roll
now replace the sponge with sausage meat
and replace the cream and jam with streaky bacon and BBQ sauce.
And replace the icing sugar with a bacon lattice.
Bacon Explosion!
I hope you're all ready for the "surprise food"!!
I'm gathering the ingredients for mine...
is anyone traveling down from macroom direction ,possably passing through clon taking the r600 to kinsail ? lovely drive in fairness ........

if you bring a 5l pot i will make rice and peas to go with the jerk chicken lol.
Not sure about Macroom or Clon in...
Looks like expressway 40 at 07:40 from Macroom (Mills)
Connecting with the 226 to Pierside Kinsale for 9:53
worth asking , irelands crazy public transport system means getting to kinsale from clon via cork
@ hopapotamus
If you can get the bus to bandon I can pick you up there in the morning and get you back there in the evening.
