Title: Fast Ferment
Post by: darren996 on April 21, 2015, 08:25:27 PM
Hi All

I see geterbrewed are stocking the fast ferment for 100 euro, any one got one of these ?

I am interested to know how people are regulating the ferm temperature.  I would like to get one and would like to know how they go with a brew belt..

Any comments, much appreciated..

Thanks

Haven't read any reviews but looking at the page I'm very skeptical this is worth €100...

> Easy to clean thanks to 15 cm screw lid
Easier than a bucket?

> Ability to harvest yeast
I can't harvest from a bucket?

> No sediment or oxygen contamination
How so?

> Guaranteed consistent batches
;D

> Integrated thermowell
Only attractive part for me.

I like the fact that you can do primary and secondary in the one vessel... no racking.. will it produce a nicer brew... probably not

I assume they mean you can dump the sediment off and you'll reduce the chance of oxygen contamination if you don't have to rack to a secondary.

I like the look and idea of these, mainly for the benefits of being able to dump the yeast and then dryhop but I don't think I'd have anywhere to mount it to a wall.

I might be interested if they get these stands in stock though.

I was interested too, but don't have anywhere in the house I'd be comfortable permanently wall mounting as I'd have to brew beside it then. A stand would be brilliant.

Could probably cobble one together if you're handy with a saw and nails too (which I am not).

Generally secondary is not needed (https://www.reddit.com/r/Homebrewing/comments/1x6hyr/regarding_secondary/).

Would look great with a line of them along the wall of your brew shed.
This time next year Rodney.

Yeah I only generally secondary for big beers. No need most of the time.

I haven't used a secondary in ages. I set the primary up on a height a couple of days before bottling, and as I get near the end usually get away without disturbing the trub too much...

Also hadn't even though if knocking together a stand goat, but you've got me thinking now...

Did a quick Google image search and I see someone has used what just looks similar to an ordinary stool with the seat taken out.

Looks cool.. a bit of ply, a jigsaw and some 2 b 1 would sort it

I would be inclined to add a cross brace or 2 on that stool.
A full complement of beer would make that collapse.

Brenmurph made a very simple conical stand from a couple of plastic buckets.

I might buy one as a treat towards the end of the month.  :)

The stand would seal the deal for me. May get one and go down the old fermenter cut out rout.
It's just monkey see, monkey want though.

I got mine a week or so ago and got a DIPA into it at the weekend. No better way to christen it.
I got it from GeterBrewer. Came to €135 plus stand delivered with the NHC discount.
Few things I noticed so far.
The bottom valve does not screw in fully/flush and there are thread exposed. Not MAJOR I suppose but will get an extra long soak in sterilizer.
Same with the thermowell. Not quite flush on the inside. Another long soak.
It is a really nifty piece of kit but. So far I like it. I have a small thermometer I got off James and it fits the  thermowell nicely. Probably not the best time to try it out with the warm weather but I'm sure worst case it will still for in my beer fridge.
I'll take a few pics and post a brew start to finish when/if I remember.

I really like it. I've done 2 brewed in it so far.
An imperial porter and a DIPA.
Both dropped really clear even the DIPA that 150g of pellets dry hopped in it.

The lid can be a bit fiddly to get a seal on but with the amount of Co2 coming out its grand.
Dumping the yeast after primary is a doddle. I purged the bulb with Co2 before opening it up again. Yeast settles out and compacts nicely.

The transfer tube that came with it was a bit short so i swapped it out for a longer silicone one.
The stand is handy and saves on a bit of diy and I think it makes it. It looks the muts nuts.

It comes with a thermowell but no actual thermometer but I had a small digital ine that fitted nicely.
I do like it. Cuts down on the transferring and moving stuff around.
I like that I can now let it sit for a few hours before pitching and allow all break material to drop out before pitching. I Let it drop out, dump, then reattach the bulb before pitching.

They are a bit pricey but are worth it in my opinion.

Yeah, it looks the business.. do you batch prime in it, thinking i could cut out transfering to a bottling bucket.

The fact that you can get rid of all solid matter, and verify it, would suggest that priming  the primary is feasible.

I have a stainless conical, and you can't visibly confirm that you have dumped everything (in fact you are not recommended to, as the racking arm position will leave beer behind if you dump all the yeast).

Doing fancy stuff isn't practical at the moment because I can't visibly confirm the level of solids in the cone.

But I would hope to do things like dump/wash yeast, big dry hops, and batch prime in the FV.

Yeah, it seems that you could do a lot with this fv, its officially on my list

I keg almost everything nowadays. Big hop monsters are better n draft. nice and fresh.

I haven't primed it but don't see why it wouldn't work.
I would ferment as normal.
Dump the bulb a few days after fermentation has stopped.
Reattach the bulb open again and let whatever is left drop out.
Dump that after another week or so then mix in priming solution.
Attach bottling stick and away you go.
There is a vid on youtube of some guy doing it but he makes a balls of it so i didnt even watch.
Might try on my next big beer I plan on bottling.

Whats it like for getting the hops out after doing a dry hop

I only use pellets but I reckon you could use leaf in a bag. Fishing line through the airlockaybe. Pull them before emptying. I'm quite happy to only use pellets though. They drop out.
