I hope a few of you can make it along for the brewday at TOG next month. It should be good fun!
Not sure if it's too early to be talking about an imperial stout, but we can have a chat about that on Tuesday at the tasting evening in WJ Kavanaghs!
Kickoff at 10 a.m. (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/ai1ec_event/capital-brewers-brewday-tog/?instance_id=279)

Hi Padraic,
Any decision and what is going to be brewed and by whom? Also I need to get confirmation of the kick off time so that I can get things squared at home in advance. I hope to be able to bring a few people from work along also.

Should be starting up around 10 a.m.
Not sure who's brewing yet, I must text Rossa and James to see if they want to take the reins as our experts!

Let me know if we'll need bottles (+how many) too. :)
Any suggestions as what people would like to see happen on this brewday?
Just a suggestion but I saw Shanna talking about drilling a stainless steel pot in another thread, I'm not sure if he already has it in yet. Hold on for a week and drill it/install the element in TOG perhaps? They might even have a hole saw closer to the size that you want etc...
I also wanted to make some blank slants at some stage, it probably wouldn't be too much trouble to do them in TOG, just need a pot and a plate. I have never done it before so if people wanted to see it done, it would be a collaborative job. :)

Hi Shiny
What do the say about great minds think alike. I suggested the same thing to Padraic many months ago and we are going to do a bucket boiler version on the day plus one or two other bits and bobs. I need a hole saw myself anyway so will pick one up (don't know if tog will have one of the correct size). Don't want to steal more of Padraics thunder as he should announce it here.
Shanna
Hi there
If Will D is reading this and your around would love to put your portrait skills to good use as Shiny will be doing giving me my beer smith voucher and it would be nice to get some photos.
Shanna
Ps: Could we do a blind taste test of the three beers from the December brew to see what people think of them?
Hi, I'll be coming along to this, be good to meet you all. If your interested in making up some slants I can help out with that if needed.
Is there a charge for TOG that we all put in for?
Should be there with the camera!

TOG give us the place to use and don't charge us anything, but the appreciate if you buy things from their tuck shop (sweets/drinsk etc.). I would propose that we do a voluntary whip around and donate half the cash to TOG for hosting us and put the other half towards ingredients for teh brewday. Hiow do people feel about this plan? I think it's better than having a set fee?

So on the day we hope to have two brews going, one extract and one all grain.
Shanna has kindly offered to do a demo of piecing togethers a kettle or two in a workshop that will include a plastic bucket and a stainless steel container.
Shiny and DanG might do a slant making workshop, I'll PM them to organise something!
(I think I've covered most of the earlier queries but if I've missed a question let me know!)
If we're heading to the B&C after I can see about getting us finger food as well.
QuoteI would propose that we do a voluntary whip around and donate half the cash to TOG for hosting us and put the other half towards ingredients for teh brewday. Hiow do people feel about this plan?
I've no problem contributing a few bucks to cover a brew day like this - after all, someone has to pay for the ingredients and asking people to donate ingredients on the day is too unreliable.
Would it be possible for brewday contributors to get a bottle of the finished brew to take home and savour? :)

I think a set price per brew day would be better. "Voluntary whip round" is quite vague and if one person donates a decent amount then others might feel obliged to do the same. €2/3 should be grand and maybe ensure everyone walks away with at least 1 bottle of beer or the promise of a bottle. Definitely agree with giving TOG something as well.
Can we maybe get an average of the cost of the last brew days?

Apart from my sarcasm let me know some of the more exotic ingredients required for your AG, I have been promising for months, down in HBC Thurs.
Would deffo be interested. Where exactly is TOG. I know where B&C is if its near

What are we brewing? And when I say we do I mean I? Anyone else want to brew? I could bring my shiny keggle.

You might be right that a suggested donation of €3 will be easier to manage and affordable for all who come along. I'll put a box by the door and people can drop their donations in there and we'll split the cash between Tog and ourselves.
What about lodging it with the National account so we can draw on it when we are buying our club house...(quickly affiliating myself with south Dublin again)

You have free reign on what you're brewing but if you'd like we can start a topic with a vote!
I think James is going to do the extract, is he bored of doing the same recipe?
I'm easy on what people are brewing!
Hi Paddy bubbles
Only problem with getting a bottle is that it takes a fair few weeks for there to be anything ready to drink :)

I would guess james and rossa's last time would have been in the 12 -14 range each.
maybe a tiny bit more with james using a bit of every grain available and rossa a bit of every salt available ;D
With regards to the costs -
I have no problem donating my ingredients most of which are very cheap (except the DME).
Its a great day !
Can wait for Sunday !
QuoteHi guys
Just had a thought do we need bottles?
Shanna
I have about 60 flip tops boxed up which I can bring down, can get us more regular bottles if we need it.
I'm going to have to miss this again unfortunately. My day off this week is being used to inspect the barrels. Can't wait, but gutted to miss another TOG
Guys any decision on a recipe yet?
Shanna
I'll be the newbie looking on and asking questions....
See you all there

I've got wlp 300 that was bottled yesterday. If we use it what would we want brewed?
1.Hopfen-Weisse
2. Hefe
3.Dunkel
4 WeissenBock
5. American wheat
I'd not say no to a Dunkel or a hopfen-weisse(but one that is more focused on dry/late hopping rather than being bitter).
The Hopfen-Weiss or Dunkel gets my vote too. I only recently found out what out a Hopfen-Weiss actually is! I've never been much enthused by American wheat beers.
I did an extract Weissen myself recently with WLP300 and I'm in two minds whether it actually turned out well or not. There's bags of banana in there and a little spice, but there's a slight off-flavour I'm not happy with. If I bring in a couple of bottles on Sunday, will you fellas diagnose it for me?? (Or is drinking during brewday a complete 'no-no'?! ;D)

Thomas, slightly off-topic I know - do you ever come across any empty Duvel bottles up there? I'm after a few for a barleywine project I'm planning.

Yeah, plus Chimay bottles as well (same kind of shape/size). I've someone after a few already but I'll see what I can do. :)
Cool, thanks! Even just a couple would be great. It's only the Duvel bottles I'm after so maybe the other "scrounger" :) would be happy with the Chimay bottles. Let me know when you have a few.

The small chimay ones don't have space for my bottling wand, might be worth checking if yours fits!!

I've bottled into the Duvel bottles before and the wand fits in fine. Are the Chimay bottles really that much smaller??
Guys -
Do we have numbers on this gig ?
In addition to the 12 or more that are confirmed?
or are you talking about ingredients...
hi can any one come along to this event or is it club members only i am new to home brewing and this seems like a good learning opportunity cheers.

Probably until 3 or 4, then possibly on to the b&c for a social one or two!
Wander in at any stage, it's a come and go as you please sort of a day!
