Title: young's APA
Post by: liaml1974 on May 20, 2015, 10:04:22 PM
hi, I've bought a young's APA and i was wondering if i could use a muslin bag for dry hopping the hop pellets. I've dry hopped beforewith pellets but it was a torture when bottling with the filler clogging. will the the bag of hops change the taste of the beer? how exactly do i use the bag?
thanks.

Just put the bag in boiling water to sterilise it, then throw in the hops and tie it. Be sure to leave it loose as the hops expand when put in the fermenter.

I have a youngs kit I need to dry hop in about a week and I'm not sure if I will use a bag or not. The youngs instructions say not to. Can't imagine there is much of a taste difference whatever method is used. Would like to hear from someone who knows more about it?

Muslin bags are grand, the hop pellets will turn to mush which can make cleaning the bag a bit messier but otherwise there's no problems and definitely no flavour change.

I've never had a problem with or without a bag.
I usually use a bag though in case i decide to reuse the yeast.
without a bag pellet hop particles will fall out into the trub.
leaf hops are a pure balls without a bag though.
if you bag leaf hops weigh them down with some marbles or they'll float on top of the beer

Make sure to boil the bag for 10 or 15 mins and give your hands a good wash with antibacterial soap and hot water before you handle the bag. And be careful to not let too much air get in the FV when adding the bag of hops. Sorry if im stating the obvious, but the only infected batch ive had was from a badly sanitized hop bag. Ended up with 25 L of vinegar.
