Title: Edible malt for snacking on?
Post by: fungalboy on May 21, 2015, 02:40:10 PM
Hi Folks,
I half remember reading about people eating malt as a snack (not just nibbling on a few grains on a brew day).

Was it mentioned on here recently? Do any suppliers sell a malt for direct consumption? Candied/Chocolate covered, etc.?

Thanks.

I can't get on Twitter in work but if you Google "weyermann frosted malts" you'll see a few Brewdog updates. They've started stocking a range of malt snacks designed to pair up with beer. Never tried them myself but I'd give them a go for the craic. I'm imagining they'll be quite hard and dry though.

i often snack on whole grain while brewing.
stay away from dark roasted malts unless you like strong flavors like espresso.
pale and wheat malts are pretty plain.
Something in between like crystal, munich, etc are nice though
there are also a load of recipes out there for things like this:

I made granola bars using Sarah Roarty's recipe in the Sláinte book, they were really nice a bit too sugary with all the honey in them.

Thanks folks. It was the Weyermann stuff I had seen before. Would anybody know where to get some in Ireland? Their website is quaintly unusable.

Where would get malt for adding to a milkshake or icecream at all?

You could use malt extract?

I think it's just really finely ground malt, otherwise health food shops might have it.
