Get'er Brewed All Grain Ingredient Box (http://www.geterbrewed.ie/) Proper English IPA Mash Kit (http://www.geterbrewed.ie/a-proper-english-ipa-all-grain-ingredient-kit/)
Instructions
We recommend that all mash kits are made with a yeast starter and you keep to the following key points
Sterilisation – ensure good sanitation
Information – follow the instructions
Temperature – keep a constant fermentation temperature
All Mash Kits are based on a 26.5 litre pre boil volume.
1. Mash the grain in 26.5 litres at 67oC for 60 minutes
2. Boil for 60 minutes adding the hop packets provided at the indicated time on each bag
3. 10 minutes before the end of the boil add the whirlfloc tablet
4. Cool with a wort chiller to 20oC
5. Take a gravity reading
6. Place wort into fermenter and pitch yeast
7. Check gravity reading to confirm when to bottle
Starting Gravity 1.050 – 1.075
Final Gravity 1.010 – 1.018
Review
The kit arrived promptly and consisted of 1 x bag of mixed, pre-crushed grains, 3 x pks vacuum foil-packed hops, 1 x whirlfloc tablet, 1 x pk Gervin GV12 Ale Yeast, 1 x muslin bag, Instructions.
Instructions were a bit lacking, but followed (mostly) to the letter.
I brew using a 50L MT with a 70L Kettle and 70L HLT, so was running at lower capacity than usual.
Any additions / comments in brackets.
1. Mash the grain [+ 5g CaCl2] in 26.5 litres at 67oC for 60 minutes [pH5.5]
[Sparged at 75oC, to bring pre-boil volume back up to 26.5 litres]
2. Boil for 60 minutes adding the hop packets provided at the indicated time on each bag
[on opening, each of the foils contained the hops in a "tea bag" – these are great!]
3. 10 minutes before the end of the boil add the whirlfloc tablet
4. Cool with a wort chiller to 20oC
5. Take a gravity reading [OG 1.067]
6. Place wort into fermenter and pitch yeast [pre-hydrated, 11g in 250ml pre-boiled and cooled water]
7. Check gravity reading to confirm when to bottle [FG 1.016, abv 6.3%]
[transferred to secondary containing 5g/L dextrose before bottling; 38 x 500ml]
Summary
Ingredients were fresh, and the kit was straightforward to use, but for general guidance a bit more detail is required in the instructions.
The hop bags were great [although the seal on one side of one of the additions was not intact, but with swelling there was little leakage, and my filter took care of the rest].
OG and FG were in the expected range, and the end result was an enjoyable and very drinkable English IPA.
Would I recommend it? I would have to say – Yes.
Proper Job!
I've one on order. ;)
good review, i have one of these but im new to all grain , your additions to the instructions should be noted by geterbrewed as they are a lot clearer
