Title: think I made a big mistake
Post by: RobShamrock on June 01, 2015, 04:30:08 PM
hey all.  Did kit no.4 on Sunday a recipe which consisted of some grain steeping and hop boiling. To the fermenter I added the hop grain steep which was boiled up with some dry malt. To this I added the lme and the kit can. Took A gravity reading and my suspicions arrived it was super low. 1.024 moved it to my fermenting position in back room added yeast temp was ok. It just didn't sit right overnight on me so checked again this morning it appears I didn't dissolve or stir in enough the two cans. Dug out and sterilized a stir paddle and gave it a good stir. is the whole batch knackered.

With any luck the yeast will have kicked off a little bit at least and it should be ok. Only thing you can do is sit and wait.

The yeast is the big worry so is it?

It will be fine. The only problem will be that your original gravity reading is wrong so you're going to have to take a guess. The yeast will eat up all the fermentable sugars whether they're fully dissolved or not. Now leave it alone. No more stirring, you hear me?

You'll be grand, leave it alone to do its business.
There's no need to boil the kit can by the way. Its designed to go straight in with cold water and the boiling could turn any hop flavor and aroma to bittering.
It shouldn't be a problem though as you added more hops in the boil to replace :)

Thanks guys panic has died down a bit. I didn't boil the kit can. Added it into primary as normal but I presumed the steeped grain wort and hops I'd boiled would be warm enough to dissolve the kit and the lme but I must have let it cool too much hopefully will kick off next 24 hrs I shall report back Tuesday evening

Your having the same experience that a man gets after changing his first born for the first time and has tucked them into the cot. De Wimmen don't get that so I would advise not mentioning it otherwise ye might be along time waiting on working on your second baby. :D
