Title: Keg to make a keggle
Post by: molc on June 06, 2015, 06:56:33 PM
Exactly as it says on the tin. With the spider group buy being discussed, I need to finally do my boil kettle build. If anyone spots a cheap keg, or has something with close to 50L capacity for my usual 30L boils, let me know.

Do you have a grinder?

Yeah the old man has punches and tools. Once I get my hands on suitable stainless, I can take care of the rest :)

If there is a way to get a few - I'd be interested in 3 for hacking. Seen a few battered yolks going on adverts every now and then. If you find a source please pass on details.

Couple of things to consider if your building a boiler. I base this all on my own experience. 1st on in particular is easy to overlook.

1. If your using an immersion chiller make sure you along any heating elements to allow the chiller pass by to the bottom of the keg.
2. Add a ground to the keg.
3. Resist the urge to use argos kettle elements and instead spend a few quid extra on the heating elements that have a self contained hood (same ones as were demonstrated at the brewcon safety talk).

4. Make a jig to hold the angle grinder rather than cut it free hand. It's safer & you will get a tighter more even cut. Don't forget to depressurise the keg before cutting. Use a large screw driver to depress the valve in the keg & watch out for any left over blow off :) Spend a couple of quid on a stainless steel cutting disk, again it does a better cut.
5. When drilling holes for taps etc using a hole saw or the like get somebody to spray the drill site with water to ensure it does not burn out the saw. Slow & steady is the order of the day.
6. Eye goggles, ear defenders, work gloves & appropriate trousers & jumper when using power tools to cut the stainless using drills or grinders. Stainless can be a bastard to cut especially when doing it for the first time so dont take any chances.

Thanks for all the tips shanna. Thankfully none of those were a surprise, especcially building a jig. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when doing this sort of work :)

Invest in some lo density elements. For cleaning they make life a lot easier. Trying to scrub elements in a 50l keg will be a pain in the hole.
