Title: [Review] Old Suffolk Strong Ale
Post by: irish_goat on June 16, 2015, 09:33:06 PM
Thanks to The Mottly Brew (http://themottlybrew.ie) for donating this  Old Suffolk Strong Ale (http://themottlybrew.ie/product/old-suffolk-strong-ale/) kit for review. I won't cover how to brew the kit as that is more than covered by Lord Eoin's guide (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/index.php/topic,669.0.html).  :)

I've never had an Old Suffolk Strong Ale before, I see Greene King make one so I'll look out for that. The beer is apparently a mix of an English Best Pale Ale and a strong vintage ale.

Contained in the kit is;

2 x LME Pouches
1 x 1kg Dextrose
1 x Priming Sugar
1 x Yeast Sachet
1 x Dry Boadicea Hops

Instructions say fermentation takes 10 days (including 5 days of dry hopping) so I imagine I'll be sampling in about a month or so, although, reading online it seems this kit ages quite well so it might be a while before it's at its best. Will update with photos of the finished beers and tasting notes over time.

Haven't had a chance to sample yet actually, I'll stick one in the fridge for tonight.

Had a bottle last night. It's ok just, I'd prefer more malt character and I'm putting that down to the  1kg of dextrose. I'd have used malt extract if it wasn't a review. There's a nice sherry aged taste coming from though and reading online a lot of reviews say this beer is completely different after a few months of ageing so I'll come back to it in the autumn and review again.
