Hi group, me again.

Just wondering if an electric tea urn could be used to brew or make beer  ?

And another one where can I get one. ? Man o man I am full of questions but have to start somewhere. Has anyone used such a thing to make a brew.

Thanks

Roo

Life moves pretty fast.....if you don't stop and look around once in a while....you could miss it.

If you mean like a Burco boiler. I use two. I heat water with one which sits above my mashtun and another below the mashtun with a filter on the tap to boil the wort.
Keep an eye out on adverts/donedeal for second hand ones, thats where I got mine or
nisbets discount them sometimes..

Yes, it's the sort of thing that was in church halls and works canteens for keeping water warm to make tea. Just thought if I could pick one or two up they might be handy. I would hate to by a loaded of new stuff as the wife is complaining about the wine making stuff I have bought. I would love to see some set ups that might give me an idea on how to get going. I am sure I can move stuff around in the garage.

Resurrecting an old thread here.

Just did my first brew last night with one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004EAERSS/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1431592330&sr=1&keywords=burco+cygnet

£83 delivered (UK). Not bad at all.

The rim is well over the 30L limit, so you can easily do a full  BIAB for a 19-Litre batch, or all-grain for a 23L batch. Left on 'HIGH' setting she kept a good rolling boil for the full hour with no cut-outs. The 2.5KW concealed Element got the 26.5L of water for mashing from around 12 to 72 degrees in just over 40 minutes.

For the last few years I've been using a modified Electrim bin (basically a plastic bucket with a couple of elements bored into it) but I've become increasingly concerned about the safety aspect of this setup (wobbly plastic with 25L of boiling sugar solution, exposed wires, liquid getting into the electrics, etc). The Burco feels sturdy, safe and looks the part too. Also, it's a piece of p*ss to clean.

Experience has taught me that a boiler is only as good as its second brew so we'll see how the next one goes, but it looks promising.

Anyway, thought this would be helpful for those of those of you who can't quite stretch to one of those Grainfathers currently being shamelessly flaunted by a handful of lucky sons-of-bitches :)

Cheers,

-Barry

Great find Bazza

I use a 25L urn someone gave to me for heating mash and sparge water.  Really cut my brew time down but it's not big enough for a boil (tho maybe on a really small batch).  Would love one of those Burco Cygnet jobs you've got Bazza but I don't  have any spare cash at the minute.  Saing that, I still haven't tried down the back of the couch  :P
