Hopefully on my last beerkit or two before moving onto the bigboys of the 'Home-Brew' world

Using an airlock for first time as using a different type of bin.  Do I fill up the Airlock with water in half of it and leave the top off for the whole time? 

Any help or suggestions much appreciated

there's usually a marker on the airlock to show the best level.
If not, aim for about half full.

Leave the cap on, it stops nasties falling in. The cap is loose fitting so it allows the CO2 to escape.
