Regrettably a mistake was made in retrieving the winning judging numbers and names from the competition system.

Monday :
This was brought to our attention by a medal winner telling Cork registrar, Eoin Layton, of his surprise at winning a medal for a low score. Eoin investigated and found the anomaly. This was passed on to John Mangan and Rossa ONeill.

They reviewed the fight summary sheet and agreed that the wrong entries were award medals. In fact the entries that were awarded medals didn't feature in the medal round (mini BOS).

Rossa, having admitted his error and having entries in this category, decided to hand the decision and process to John Mangan and competition secretary James Keane.  Eoin, having found the problem, also stepped back as he had entries too.

Wednesday :

The 3 medallists were contacted by John by phone and e-mail and the situation explained to them. They were not asked to return any medals although some have volunteered to.

Its important for people to understand that we are a volunteer organisation and everyone gives their time for free. Occasionally mistakes happen and when they do its important to deal with them correctly.

This is about setting the record straight and being open and honest to entrants and club members. Integrity of the competition is key.

The original winners will receive the voucher as a recompense.

The correct medals winners were Rossa and Eoin - which made the situation extremely difficult as you can imagine.

The whole thing is regrettable but the decision of the competition organisers is final.

Probably not helped by the fact last year we had 24 Medals this year it was 3 times that number and our Head Steward was taken ill that afternoon.

Rossa

The 3 lads involved are going to be giving the gold medal prize voucher each as a recompense.

Eoin

Not cool, at all.

Has anything been posted on twitter, by us I mean.....I've already seen what Noby has to say about it?

Chris

Lads ye have run an amazing competition. Mistakes happen. If ye were doing this for profit we would never have heard about this mistake. The honesty, dedication and success of the competition is a tribute to all of you.

No. I didn't think that was the place to address this. I've been in touch with Cormac about the tweet and have cleared the air.

OK fair enough.

The method of discovery is my only bone of contention. Mistakes happen and a huge amount of work and logistics went into the competition, thanks guys, so it's a wonder more didn't happen. Thanks to all involved and hopefully lessons have been learned.

Rossa

Lessons were certainly learned. I'd be recommending a double check process next year. We had it for the score sheets but not for the retrieval of names.

Hi Eoin,

Not cool, Absolutely.

In simple terms, a mistake was made which we have now examined and we know exactly how it happened.
As soon as the issue came to light I jumped on it as I was not implicated and dealt with it as humanly and incisively as possible. This is explained in the OP and is a statement of fact.

All our efforts are voluntary. We have jobs and families so cannot catch each and every communication.
I don't know Noby personally and unfortunately we cannot react to every comment, tweet, like or unlike.

We have all put a lot of time and effort into the organisation and execution of the competition, brewers and organisers alike. We have pulled off another excellently run event with one genuine error which we are trying to correct as fairly, transparently and honestly as possible.

Regards,
John Mangan

One note from me is that all categories were checked for errors, not just this one.
When I noticed the mistake, I immediately handed it off to the lads to verify from the physical flightsheets and stepped back from the decision and communication process.

It is unfortunate for those who were accidentally awarded pole positions, and I'm sorry for any inconvenience and frustration it causes.

However it is also commendable that out of 24 categories there was only 1 with a mistake (simply the wrong names were pulled for the winning entry numbers) even with the amount of printed, handwritten and digital paperwork involved over two very hectic events and countless dedicated volunteers.

I must say that the swift and decisive response here to this is a credit to ye all. I wish our politicians had the same integrity. :)
