Have just myself one of these.

How hot does it run?

I assume it runs hotest when you have dialled down the boil?

Should the heatsink protrude through the box wall?

Is it enough to drill Vent Holes in the box its mounted in?

Naturally the heat sink and the metal potentiometer body need to be connect to earth!

Hi Will

I have two of these mounted inside a a plastic junction box. I use them to dial down two 2.4kw heating elements. Used them for about 6 brews so far with no problems (touch wood). If you had space for a small fan to blow air over them i think it would do no harm.

I used an old cpu heatsink. It is protruding out of the box but it doesn't get hot enough to justify it. If you look at the heat sinks that are specifically  designed for these relays, they have mounting holes which would appear that they are intended to be fixed to the inside of an enclosure.

I don't think vent holes are necessary myself.

I don't have my heatsink earthed. I asked the question here before and got no reply, so I'd be interested to know too.

Edit: CPU not PCU!

I cut a hole in the top of my control box and mount a heat sink I had.

For clarification Will is this the SCR you have?

Is it to be mounted in a box on its own or as part of an overall control panel?
If it is on its own I would suggest mounting it in a metal box, all metal parts earthed as you suggest, then the box can help dissipate the heat. Electrical wholesalers sell a 100x100 galvanised box which would suit I reckon.

Ps you would also need insulated pillars to mount the circuit board to the box, and box plus lid would need to be earthed

Yes thats the one.

It may get mounted into my big ATC-800 box or it might get mounted in a small box fitted inline between a plug and a free socket.

Of course being an old test engineer I will hook it up temporarily but safe and see what happens!
