STC and Heat Belt (and a keg question)

Dr Horrible

I used a 9inch Stainless thermowell installed in the center of my lid to both avoid any problems that you might have with sealing/leaking if you put the thermowell in through the side (although if you like Tec-7 then you probably won't be worried) and also to get to the centre of the batch as this is my preferred spot to measure from.  Then just dropped the STC temp probe to the bottom and put some insulation at the top to seal it a bit.   Cut a hole in the lid and fitted an airlock gasket, very tight fit so seals well.
Had to get it shipped from the states (got it on Amazon), so it cost about 10 dollars but about twice that in shipping!

Whats a thermowell?

It's a temperature probe which is drilled into the fermenter or boiler.

Like this clickmeyouknowyouwantto  :)

Garry, does that probe work with an STC-1000 or is it just an example?

I thought it would, but it turns out it doesn't  :( The STC-1000 needs a thermistor sensor and the PT100 probe is a thermocouple. There's a difference apparently!

You'll have to use the STC-1000 probe in a thermowell. Like what Dr.H is describing above.

What is the best source for heating wire/tape for fermentors?  I've seen the Raychem stuff at £9/m ish but was wondering if there was a better or cheaper source anywhere
