So yeah if you are very careful you separate inner and outer layer as I am doing to ensure I get a good split across 2 starters

Qs

Why not just make one double sized starter?

Leann ull

If I make a starter I always pour off spent wort so 2l starter I only use 2-300ml settled yeast, this can be tricky with lager yeasts, but much easier to divide into 2 conicals at this stage and pour than guessing what 50% of yeast left in conical is

Qs

Leann ull

And just to let you know I did try to pour a yeast slurry into 2 fermenters from 1 conical before, just a little bit more, ok just one last bit..oh bollox

delzep

Just got one of these. It claims it's ready to pitch into 20l of wort (under 1.070) so presumably doesn't need a starter?

Looks to be a lot more yeast in there compared to the old vials anyway

Leann ull

I know HB shops get them cold and look after them well I would still make a starter to ensure viability as you don't know how it was handled before you got it sitting on hot air vent of postman pats van etc.
Judged a beer last night underpitched with only one of those.

delzep

Aye yer probably right.

Although 2 weeks since manufacturing date and delivery in that weather.... :)

Surprisingly,Chris White wasn't too enthusiastic about starters at brewcon. I would always do one for liquid yeast tbh.

Leann ull

the yanks regularly pitch 2 vials, the flash gits! :D

I've used 3 of the PurePitch packs now, and I'm pretty impressed. I don't have any figures to back this up, but my starters seem to kick off earlier.

I find there's a lot of yeast left in the packet after I pour - you have to leave it suspended over the flask for a minute to let all the goodies roll out.

They're as prone to fizzing as the vials, which caught me unaware the last time I opened one.

I don't separate the two pouches beforehand, I just cut through both at the same time. Is there any advantage to separating them?

Thanks for the heads up there. I was ok the last time I opened one but would hate to get caught out and have half the yeast on the floor :)
Fermenting: IPA, Lambic, Mead
Conditioning: Lambic, Cider, RIS, Ole Ale, Saison
On Tap: IPA, Helles, Best Bitter

no advantage to separating packet just morbid curiosity just sanitise blades on your scissors, as you never know what could be growing under your toenails.

Qs

I just sanitize the outside of the packet and it fits nicely suspended in the demijohn dripping the yeast. I find that to be the best things about them so far.
