The other thing that annoys me is the servings have gotten smaller but the price has stayed the same. I remember in Galway Bay pubs, when they first opened, that a half was 2.50 and a pint was 5. I quite like a 330ml serving, but when I get a beer that's under 5% avg, I want a decent pint to drink.

If the pint price on a particular keg exceeds 6.75e then its sold in a 330ml glass serving. Also, You can still get pints & halves on most beers. (halves still cost half the price of the pint)
On tap: Flanders, Gose,
Fermenting: Oatmeal Brown, 200ish Fathoms,
Ageing: bretted 1890 export stout.
To brew:  2015 RIS, Kellerbier, Altbier.

Wife says to me one day... "so do you love beer more than me?....
Naturally, I replied,...... making it or drinking it??😱😱

Two Irish craft brewers have told me they are selling their kegs to pubs for approx 20 euro a keg cheaper than the big players, but their pints are still costing more to the customer.

Who's selling Punk on draft? That's close to what Brewdog charge for it tbf (although Euro weakness obviously is a factor)..

The Roundy in Cork have Dead Pony Club. Usually have a guest 8 degrees beer too - last one I had was their Nelson Sauvin Saison. They charge regular prices  - about a fiver - for these.

And if you can get Beamish at €3.60 even in city centre pubs in Dublin, it makes you wonder why brewers running their own pubs can't match it for their regular range.

Because there is decades of process engineering in beers like Beamish to drive its cost of manufacturing down, allowing it to be sold at profit at that price. Craft Brewers are rarely in the same position.

And the same holds true for every other medium to macro beer.  Cask ale in the UK is available at the same price level despite coming from breweries the same size as the large Irish craft brewers.

Operations such as the Porterhouse simply make massive margins on what they sell, as seen in their ability to buy their Covent Garden site in cash.

The downstairs/gig section of The Lower Deck in Portobello has a sign behind the bar:

6.50

Saturday, that went for both 500ml bottles of Dungarvan Mine Head (retail: €3.90) and 330ml bottles of BrewDog Punk (retail:€2.99)

The majority of cask ale producers by volume are the large regionals (Fullers, Sheperd Neame, St Austells, Greene King etc.) they are considerably bigger than the largest Irish Craft Brewers. But Cask Ale is an oddity in terms of pricing in the UK, with a glass ceiling on prices at the handpull. As a perishable product, where the publican bears the cost of the spoilage, and the consumer is wary of cask past its best, it has evolved into a high turnover product, and it has very low margins. Many UK brewers are finding the wholesale prices almost unsustainable, and many successful cask-only microbreweries are launching kegged products as their margins and risk are better.

As a 'value' beer there is a lot going on to keep cask ale cheaper than everything else.

I think almost all the craft beers in my local are around £3.50 for 500lm . the same price as hoegaarden & franziskanerr draft pints. Cant really speak for the prices on smaller bottles .But they have a decent range esp for a backwater town .

I normally drink hoegaarden , franziskaner or Goats but anyway ,so paying the same price to try something new isn't a big deal . I`m more likely to buy them than the regular draft pints at £3 .

Prices taken from a beer menu at a pub in Brighton that I was at this weekend. Notice that's the price for a half pint. I almost ordered a full pint...

Pic I took at http://drygate.com/ in Glasgow

I wish we had more bars with taps on the back wall. Having to jump around huge tap handles in front of the bar to get served, especially in a place like Against the Grain, is a pain in the arse. Why don't we do it over here? Macro influence?

mr hoppy

I was in Wetherspoons in Cork last weekend and has delicious super malty Vienna best bitter and an equally delicious Thunder Road Pacific hopped with Galaxy for €5 total. Shop around.

You mostly get taps at the back in Taprooms in the States as the cold storage is one big room where all the kegs are stored. Its a bit hipster now to get them in this part of the world. But i do agree it can be hard to even prder a pint never mind pass one through the forest of taps...
