Old Ale recipe

http://www.fuggled.net/2013/01/international-homebrew-project-recipe.html

O.G. - 1.079 (19° Plato)
F.G. - 1.024 (6° Plato)
ABV - 7.3%
SRM - 6 (Gold to Copper)
IBU - 125
The recipe is simplicity itself:
100% Pale malt
83 IBU of Cluster for 90 minutes
42 IBU of Kent Goldings for 30 minutes
Wyeast 1028 London Ale/White Labs WLP013 London Ale

Not as easy as this!

?

That recipe won me a gold in Belfast. Nothing wrong with it.
Lovely beer.

nigel_c

Lads its not looking good for my RIS. The elements scorched the wort and it has a nasty bitter smokey twang to it. Batch looks like it gonna be dumped.
If anyone want to take up my place feel free or ill do my best to get another lot on the go. Not sure when though. So annoyed. waste of a day and 38L of beer.

Leann ull

Do you do a mad boil Nigel?
I know the OG is very high.

nigel_c

Wasn't a mad vigorous boil. 60 min as well. Something just must have caught and scorched. If I was using LME or DME I could understand how it might have happened but all grain. I cleaned a lot of charcoal like crud off the element and did a full oxy clean after and got some amount of crap off.
I'm normally pretty regular at cleaning my element but there must have been some build up on it. That plus a 1.090 ish wort, not good.
:-[

Leann ull

Just looking to learn as I've never had a problem touch wood although some have come close until I inverted my elements off the base of the floor and in my head I am not superheating a concentrated area, I also helps by not interfering with whirlpool I also think I get better rolling boil as colder wort comes around from below.
The real answer is the fellas using ardbirs where they only apply 70-90% of current and it's impossible to get a burnt element lucky sods!

Anyways back on topic it might clean up in fermentation?

nigel_c

I'm going to pull a yeast vial of my batch and try blending it with some tomorrow night at our meet up. I'm only one share so can see how it blends using the ratio of my share to the full cask. Fingers crossed. To be honest though, I don't have high hopes.

Simon_

My RIS is finished. ~23L
My Old Ale should be done in a week. Probably 22L
