Good even,

I recently had a discussion with the guy (Bruno) that organised the Portuguese Nationals. At present there is only 2 qualified BJCP judges in the whole of Portugal.

For this  years competition it was hoped that all categories would be BJCP judged. That's where you come in.

If you're BJCP qualified and interested in judging in the Portuguese nationals please either reply to this message or send me a PM. The real goal here is to get the Portuguese nationals judged to a BJCP standard so the the home brewers get some proper scoring and feedback.

The competition will be held in October 2017

Let me.know if you're interested.

I've never been to Portugal, if I can get cheap flights etc. I might be interested.

Keep me informed!

This year I think there is a plan to do three legs, one in Porto, one in Lisbon and one down South (Algarve or similar) there has been no concrete plans yet though. As for costs, like the Irish competition, this is run by volunteers so no costs will be covered

Yeah fair enough but we ain't requesting judges from abroad.
Other amateur organizations offer people a bed or something at least in one of the members houses.

I just think its a hell of a lot of expect anyone to do.

If you don't want to do it then fine. Some people have already expressed an interest and are willing to travel at their own expense. By the way this will happen with or without help from Irish bjcp judges.

I got a request from a London club & I know Ali has asked for irish judges for one in the Bristol area.

With a restricted BJCP exam spaces in Europe, we are probably on a lot of countries wish lists.

There would rarely be any costs covered in any of these (they are all usually voluntary organisations, so maybe a bit of food & beers).

I think it's as much a polite request & if anyone is able to do it (somebody might be able to tie it in with preexisting travel) it's a bonus for them.

On the plus side fair fecks to organisers of the course and the judges to enable the NHC to have a large number of BJCP judges and ongoing education program.
Have we got the highest for any EU country?

Yeah I was really impressed by the amount of BJCP certified (or waiting certification) Judges that are registered for the nationals. No mean feat.

Oh i know it was a polite request but its asking a lot and i think you're a lunatic to actual go out of pocket so much to do it

No more I guess than asking organisers to give up their Saturdays to organise beer venues and train judges
Might be a bit of fun as a group.
I'm sure whoever was hosting would provide a bed and a meal if you needed it.

Is the competition being run in English? Will the scoresheets be filled out in English or Portuguese?

I asked this same question and the answer was "English is fine" most of the younger generation in Portugal have very very good English, both written and spoken so all scoresheets can be written in English.

Can you forward the contact details of Bruno to me? London Amateur Brewers have been training up a lot of BJCP judges, and some may be willing to travel then.
