Cleaning chest freezer

My chest freezer fermentation chamber has started to smell sour so I want to clean it. Any advice on the best way to clean a chest freezer and remove the smell? What chemicals should I be using and how should I be using them?

johnrm

My thoughts...
Shut off Freezer - Lid open it and let it get to ambient.
Clean with Soapy water and plastic scrubby.
Get into all nooks and crannies - crap lives right in there.
Towel Dry.
Squirty bottle with mild bleach solution - Hit all surfaces.
Towel dry (fresh towel)

I have an undercounter wine fridge (Was in the house when we bought it - Now a Beer Fridge!)
It was stinky initially from lack of use - The above seemed to sort it.

Do you have a circulation fan in there?
This might help stop the air stagnating.

Thanks John, just what I was looking for. I was thinking Oxy at first, but definitely bleach solution should do the trick. Does your win fridge still get stinky from time to time? I don't have fan yet but it's on the list.

Milton is a good man for sterilising fridges without leaving a chlorine taint like some bleaches.

There's no such thing as bad beer - some just taste better than others

BrewDorg

Where could I get my hands on that? I see it on Amazon

Any supermarket in the baby section, it's used to sterilise baby's bottles etc

Also, what about Starsan or whatever you use for your equipment sanitation ?

BrewDorg

Ah sound, will look for it in Supervalu.

I've used Starsan up until this point and the sour smell still lingers. I had a beer with a lacto infection in the chamber at one point and it started stinking around that time. I want to give the whole thing a big scrub and clean to kill of whatever is hanging around in there

Handheld steam cleaners going in Lidl at the moment,

johnrm

Milton is just a light bleach anyway.

From their website...
What is Milton Sterilising Fluid made of?
Milton Fluid is made of an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite and 16.5% sodium chloride. The Milton Fluid that is available to buy is a strength of 2% sodium hypochlorite.

i.e. Dilute Bleach.

The Milton sounds handy so, gonna pick it up next time I see it. Thanks for the all the advice

Yeah, John is right - hit it with the Milton. Starsan won't kill mould spores. For even better mass extinction, add some vinegar to the diluted bleach. As Samuel L Jackson says in Jackie Brown, this will absolutely positively kill every motherf**** in the room! Charlie Talley of FiveStar has a lot to say about this in the following interview (from 12:30 on):
