Nitro Fizzle!

hi guys,

I have recently just set up my nitro kit for my keezer and have hit a snag.

After brewing a chocolate orange stout and carbing it on Co2 for about 2 weeks on 10PSI @ 4c I switched it onto the nitro for a week. I believe it to be carbed to about 2.3 vols.

While the stout is bang on what I wanted, the cascade does happen but the the head "fizzles" soon after. Now, I kind of half expected this because of he sparkler tap but within a few mins the head just dissipates, and the head doesn't seem as creamy as I'd expected.

Research tells me that its over carbed but if it is how do I A. correct this and B. get it right for next time?

Any help is welcomed!

Thanks,
Jon

Yeah, I thought that it may be the oils from the orange peel...but doesn't say anything about the fizzle...

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong... But in order to get the creamy head you should only carb to 1.7/1.8 vols max. Otherwise it will dissipate as to co2 "escapes" thus collapsing the head.. I've had that issue previously and that is how I resolved it..hope that helps

1 is good, 2 is better, 3 is enough & 4 isn't half enough

Try de gas the keg, Co2 to 1.20-1.25 then nitro. Hope it helps

You don't carb with nitro at all. Nitro beer is basically flat. I do find that the head isn't  always that great on the first glass or two out of a nitro keg but after that it's fine.

I assume you have the pressure up good and high on the nitro?

the last time i served stout it was with a 70/30 mix at 30 psi. from a corney keg. poured a nice pint.

jonmuni

Thanks for that guys.

I've looked into this a bit more and it seems to be over carbed.

So, I've let the keg warm up for two days and given it a good shake then burped the keg repeatedly and placed back in the keezer. Put it on 5 PSI @ 4c which should carb it to about 1.8 vols and will leave it like that for about 10 days. I'll then hit it with the nitro for 2 days on 25-30 PSI and let her rip.

I'll report back with the results....

Cheers again folks!

only downside is by burping the keg of co2 means you are scrubbing some of your nice aroma out too.  :-[

yeah, but prefer to lose some aroma and recover the nitro pour!
