Using Brewing for an Engineering Degree

I'd put up a few pics of this on some of the facebook groups but forgot about putting it up here....For my degree I built a Herms mash system but automated it using SCADA software..This allows me to control and monitor the mash from another area in the house, or theoretically anywhere... I'll get around to uploading a video of it working...heres a link to the project write up if anyone wants to know how i built and programmed it https://www.dropbox.com/s/fewv05oq4y0ctiy/HERMS_Project.docx?dl=0...i'm about to start adding motorised valves to the brew rig and the plan is to have it run through a whole brew by itself eventually...heres a few photos of it


This is the control front screen...the pull down menu has every BJCP style which automatically sets the mash temp for that style...or you can set it to manual and plug in what mash temp you want...i've updated it recently to allow for pre programmed step mashes

Nice job and good write up, I have control box and interface envy.
My own probe I calibrated with a thermopen at the point of return of the wort as the bloody thing was dropping 0.5 degree between the heat exchanger even going through what I thought was insulated silicone tubing.

Where did you ever get the idea for that heat exchanger

Original credit goes to the lads on Jim's that were using copper in domestic kettles
I have to say though 3kw heating 5l gives so much more punch on steps vs other systems I've seen and way better than my grainfather

i haven't used in an age but think it was 1 degree every 50 secs on 25l or 1:20 on 50l
