I tried my first 7 day, 6 bottle, wine kit, and bottled the resulting 5+ bottles last week.

The kit is supposed to result in an 11% wine, however it actually came out as 8%.
Wondering what caused this difference.

The initial SG was 1.053 (adjusted reading)
Final SG was 0.994 (adjusted reading)

The kit is a 7 Day, Cabernet Sauvignon, 6 bottle.
Made in glass demijohn, with Te75 immersion heater etc...
No extra sugar required, just uses the bag of grape juice, which is then topped up to the required 4.5 litres

I'm thinking the kit is maybe for a US gallon (3.8l)

Emptygui

The box says it makes 4.5 liters, and the instructions also say top up to 4.5 liters.
So it's not based on a US gallon.

I can give brand info etc... If that would make a difference.

I have another of these kits for a Shiraz/Merlot, that I haven't started yet.

What does the adjusted reading mean?

Emptygui

I call the SG, corrected for temperature, the adjusted reading.

nigel_c

Hydrometer or refractometer for FG reading ?

Emptygui

Glass hygrometer, calibrated to 60degF.
Its older than I am, over 50 yrs old, and I understand how it's read.

Update:
I decided to try the 2nd 7 day kit.
I measured the initial SG as 1040, however I decided to ensure everything was well mixed and took a second SG which read 1074.
I'm guessing the first kit was not properly mixed, resulting in the incorrect and low sg.

Great to know I didn't mess up the first wine kit after all.

So, I've learnt something, which is always good.
