Ok so with not being able to get into town this weekend I decided to look at ordering a box of coopers botttles online. As it happens I went to the coopers site first and the bottles there are 740ml while on all the Irish sites they are only 500ml. Is there any particular reason for this?

There's a couple of different sizes available - the 500ml ones are the most popular here.

Ciderhead

You can only buy 500ml in Ireland and it causes confusion over how many of their drops your are supposed to use as they advocate 1 for their 330s/500s and 2 for their 750s

Thanks guys but what has me curious is WHY? Ciderhead I agree it is bloody confusing. There must be some reason you cannot get the bigger bottles here? Actually 1lt ox bar bottles would be better,a lot more convenient for storage and conditioning as well as dispensing.

Oxygen permeation issues with bigger bottles I guess, and also if you crack a bottle are you seriously gonna drink 2 pints plus in a session, I pour myself 300mls from a keg every other night that's plenty to quench my thirst

We'll I suppose it depends on what you considet a session. I mean if you are only going to drink 300ml every other night then its not really worth the effort of brewing in the first place imho  ;D

If I was cracking open a beer why would I stop at just one? :o

My beers are 5-7% That's 2 units per drink 4 times a week and one of 2 more at the week end and you are up to 10, half the recommended weekly intake, its about quality not quantity, plenty for me thanks. I have been know to throw beer out :o

The reason is very simple id say.
Thats all HomebrewWest ordered in.
He might actually be able to get you the 740ml ordered in if you can wait for them. Ask him.

You're one of the minority that wants 740ml bottles.
It doesn't make sense to supply a product that most people in Ireland don't want.

To simplify the carb drops issue, either:
1 - bulk prime - no more drops, less cost
2 - just use 1 - 1 drop in a 500ml bottle is 6grams per liter. perfect for ales imho. if you really want to use the coopers recommended 9g/l just use 1.5 per 500ml bottle. simples.
3 -get different bottles

otherwise, as if they can probably order them in for you, or you can buy them from coopers here

I was only wondering why we could not get them is all. I did not realise that homebrewwest supplied all the UK and Irish home brew shops? I just think they are a handier size is all. Each size had its place tbh, remember bigger bottles means less bottled to fill as well. When I get a laptop I will email homebrewwest and ask them about it.
