Because its a 30% Glass filled Nylon 6 housing (the base resin of which will be car airbags)with an Acetal Impeller and SBS "O" rings or membrame. All of which are 40% more expensive in food grades so no its not food approved, unlike the solar pumps that specifically mention WRAS and potable water approval.

Thats the problem with johnny know it alls, do I tell you how to configure and manage networks, no, so you can F. O. if you think you know more about my business than me.
I supply 4 pump manufacturers in this country, 2 domestic and 2 industrial, about 10% of the business are products that go into the domestic or industrial side for pumping of liquids for human consumption.
The hoops and costs associated with supplying and continuing to supply that 10% are ridiculous.
So Thomas I am going into Aldi tonight and will take one of these products apart and along with the holes in my hand will prove to you its not suitable for domestic water.

Hi Ciderhead

I have my eye on one of the  pumps (see link above) with a 12v dc power supply, piping and connectors. If your interested in the same (they claim to be food grade plastic).  We could try round up a few others and see if the guy might give us a reduction on a group buy.

i'm guessing then that using the paint strainer nylon mesh for the hop spider is ok then if your doin it so

not being smart about that - I've been thinkin about making one - especially after the point baout better uitilsation of teh hops given the rolling boil goin through it & had reszervations about using the paint strainer stuff, but i presume given what you know about this stuff - if your using it - it must be ok - right ?

Lets back up the truck a bit as I am getting a bit of a sermon on the mount reputation here about food safety and plastics.
I see my job as letting you guys know what's food safe and what's not, choosing to use it is your own affair.
With the impeller pump from Lidl or the piston pump from Aldi, will they kill you, certainly not!. Will they make you sick, no, could they impart flavour to your beer, perhaps, but unlikely.
So what's all the fuss about then if the contact time is minimal?
They can contain ingredients including heavy metals in minute quantities, but Ciderhead we are filling ourselves full of alcohol and killing ourselves anyway?
Even JD flagged up to me last week about the band I was using was galvanised and of course not food safe although I had already replaced it but I really appreciated heads up.

To answer your question the nylon mesh bags are normally made with water pressure looms and the base grade used is what they call reactor grade, so straight out of the reactor and relatively pure with no additives. The buyer I use on ebay stated that they were food safe for jam-making

Final note; everything and I mean everything I use gets a good rinse before I brew with it, I have it in my head its to get rid of bugs etc. but will also wash off any residuals.
