Ah I know, I use demijohns for starters meself. On my demijohn it says not to heat or add liquid above 40C though.

Good point about the lager starter Dempsey but I really can't see myself brewing much lager as I'm not a big fan (once for curiosity I'm sure) but as Will_D said if I need to make a massive starter I'll just use a demi-john...

I tried a big starter in a demijohn. Great idea I thought untill I put it on the stir plate and because the base is convex (a hump in the middle) the stir bar kept flying off to the edge! I had to hurriedly sanatise a 5l stock pot and ballance that on the stir plate.
Are there flat bottomed demi johns?
By the way I just broke one of my 2l flasks so if there are any more going......? Maybe another group?
