While fermenting. Should I leave the little cap on the bubbler or of. (or does it make a difference?)

Garry

Leave it on. It stops nasty's getting in. The cap is loose fitting so it still allows the gas to escape.

I see this is your first post, welcome  :)

Thank you. It's my first batch of beer too. seems to be going ok. I picked up a kit after a 'home kit course' in The Brew Club.

Ciderhead

welcome along, have your a sanitised liquid in the bubbler?
I just normally use water and a campden tablet chucked in the top.

Garry

What kit are you doing?

I usually put cooled boiled water in the bubbler. I must remember to use a campden table next time I forget to boil the kettle, thanks CH. I've heard of people putting vodka in the bubbler but I don't think that's necessary?

Shane Phelan

I spray in a few ml of starsan into the bubbler, I find its less noisy if you barely fill it.

Less noisy? Don't you find the blub blub blub therapeutic?

Shane Phelan

During the day yeah, I will publicly admit to being an airlock stalker/sniffer, but at night time it wreaks my head. I live in a tiny apartment so cant put it far enough away!

I find it soothing at any time  :)

Ciderhead

I used to use SS but some of the earth shakers I had foamed it all right out of the bubbler :D
Its ASMR for homebrewers  ;D

I Just used plain water. Will this ruin my batch?

Garry

No, it's not ruined :P But sometimes the water in the bubbler gets sucked into the fermenter when you move the fermenter or something? If there are nastys in the water it might then infect the brew.

Just be careful handling the fermenter, opening the lid etc so that the water doesn't get sucked in. I'm sure it will be fine.

I always use plain water and never had any problems, even with wines that sit for months on end :)

Ciderhead

You obviously have never had suckback ;)
