Might be of interest to some folk here...

" Since ancient times, people have been brewing, distilling, and fermenting a dizzying array of herbs, flowers, trees, fruits, and fungi. Hear the fascinating tales behind many of the concoctions that have been created, each one a unique contribution to the traditions and cultural history of many people across the world. Time: 3.30pm, meet at the visitor centre "

I went to this. Didn't get much from it. For some reason I pictured someone taking us round the herb garden and showing us all the botanicals used to flavour ale before hops came along (alecost, bog myrtle, heather, etc). Nothing of the sort. Instead they showed us all the plants they had that people had somewhere, at some stage, used to make alcohol (except barley, rye, wheat): apples, pears, grapes, bananas, potatoes, agave, monkey puzzle trees... as well as oak trees for making barrels and a cork tree. The guide was pretty good and spoke without notes the whole time.

Couldn't make this unfortunately due to a woejus hangover... Was really gutted but if the talk wasn't so great I don't feel so bad for missing it

I didn't catch that part of the talk unfortunately as I had the kids with me and they were making a bit of a din at that exact part of the walk!

Oops! C2H5OH ?
Although the guide did say that it is not stable and has to be consumed almost immediately. So maybe I'm partly correct.
