How big is your fermenter?

32 l to the rim! Took out another 3 L into a DJ and think its stable now.

Gravity check: Down to 1.060 already - after about 36 hours.

Fermenting at about 19 C

Got about 6 L  of head if you know what I mean
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Lads,
I'm conscious of hitting targets for this brew (don't care so much normally when it's just for myself).
My plan is to mash with 14.5L of water for the 5.75kg of grain and to sparge with 16L (2x8L) of water.
This should give me approx. 25L in the boiler with a further 2 - 3L for the LME to give me about 27 - 28L.
Allowing for evaporation and hop soakage giving me 23L in fermenter.
Is that right?
Ok, according to BeerSmith, pre boil voil is 30.71l. 2l LME, so 28.71l is what I'll collect.

Hi lads.
I am just sorting bits for brew should I use a Whirlflock tab.

Yes

I like the idea of the extra malt and fermenting the extra separately in a DJ. I think Ill go this rout as well so we dont come up short. An extra Liter or 2  x 2 or 2 brewers would save doing a top up brew if it came down to it again.

I'm planning on brewing all day Saturday. A double brew day. Herself is away so might as well.  :)

Rats

Planing on doing my brew tomorrow and was looking at Nigel's post.

Barleywine Recipe.
23L Batch size
OG 1.091
IBU 104.8

If I put all my data in BS it give me an IBU of 75.3 for 23L batch
Did I do something wrong?

What's the AA of your hops? Same as Nigels?

Edit: Checked the recipe again in BS using Apollo 19.5 % & Centennial 13.5%

Got 121.7 IBU when calculated without LME
and 89 IBU with LME added for the last 15 minutes.

Rats

That is the AA% that I used only had Apollo as 19%. With correction of 0.5% it went up to 77.2 and without LME 100.7

Sent from the thingy in my hand.

BS or BS2 ?

Edit: Checked with BrewMate and got similiar results to previously posted.

Rats

I kept my Tot Efficiency at program default. 72%

I'll update my numbers here so others have an idea.

I went with 4.75kg Maris and .5kg Amber - going into 23litre - to give 22 Litres.
3 litres of LME mix to be added to bring vol up to 25litres

this should give me the required 24litres for secondary in the barrel.
