I would tend to agree - dark hybrids are drifting off-track in my book.

Will_D

Talking to James about the comp and we both think the entry fee should be €5.
Registration is already $30! ( which is about a quarter of 50 entries at €2 a pop)

So any spare cash might be split between prizes the NCB equipment fund.
This then would subsidise NCB entrants!

Any comments?

Sounds fine Will.

I however would disagree that we shouldn't include Cat 7 beers. 7b should be ruled out IMO as the Cal Common yeast is a lager yeast. But with 7a and 7c although they can be brewed as a lager, most homebrewers will use a German Ale or Alt ale yeast. Our rules could state that no lager yeast can be used for these styles.

Also... I may have brewed an alt beer recently ;-)
It may help to fill the spots if there are more styles available for people to brew.

Jacob

Our comp theme is 'Can't believe it's not a lager'.
Get a glass of anything from cat 7 and you'll know just by looking at it that it's not a lager (Coors/Bud ...).
Which for me a denial of the competiton idea.

ColmR

Ya, but is a Vienna or a Dunkel or a Schwartz beer not a lager? ;-)

I do know what you mean though :-)

I may have picked this up all wrong but is it not brewing a lager recipe and replace the bottom fermenting lager for top fermenting ale yeast? Try pass an ale off as a lager. My interpretation of " I can't believe it's not a lager " would be only styles that actually are lagers would be included and these beers must be brewed with an ale yeast. So styles 1-6 and 12c Baltic porter.
The entered beers are then judged under the style guidelines of "lager" they are entered as.

Lads we all know how to brew lagerish beer using ale yeast but then what's the point in registering the event with BJCP?

Lagers have different appearances but they are still lagers.
Think of it like this. A BJCP judge is presented with a beer in category 2B. Bohemian Pilsener. The beer is brewed with Nottingham yeast at 10c. Its crystal clear, crisp malty beer with soft and rounded bitterness and spicy flavor from Saaz hops.
The judge scores the beer and then says to him/herself . Jasus I Can't believe it's not a lager.
This would be my take on the competition rather than a well made cream or blonde ale that may or may not be brewed with a lager yeast depending on the brewery.

I'm fine with that Nigel. As long as it will look like lager (SRM up to 7,8) :D
What other NCB members think about it?

Will_D

I thought most of this had been agreed at the March meeting.

Reason for BJCP is to get some points for the judges who have sat the tasting exam and also as expressed at that meeting for some "new blood" to experience tasting/exams to see if they enjoy it and want to do the next course.

The cat was agreed to be Cat 6.

I confused the system by mentioning Cat 7!

So "I can't believe its not Lager" is cat 6

But its quite easy to believe it's not a lager when the category is a cream ale, blonde ale, kolsch or american wheat or rye.
I'd like to hear from more members on this because the numbers at the last meeting were low and think some people missed out on exactly what the competition is. If everyone is happy to just brew to the 6's I'll happily go along but if people want all the lager styles open we should reconsider the brief.

Will_D

Ok guys, we are registered!

We are competition number 203374.

@CH: Did not have to specify any styles, limitatations etc. Mainly just the comp name "ICBINL" and the organiser contact details.

Onwards and upwards

I agree with nigels point. But we were also talking about a summer ale comp. Getting into the darkerside not so summery me thinks.
