This July we've booked a cottage in the above town on the Cork coast for a week.

For a change we're staying somewhere within walking distance of a pub/restaurant (although, judging by TripAdvisor reviews it's a little overpriced for what you get), so none of that pesky having to drive back malarkey.

So, to our NHC Cork contingent, any pointers to decent pubs (that do craft ale)/restaurants, etc within short driving distance would be greatly appreciated. We're close to Skibbereen, which looks a decent spot.

Bit of a craft beer wilderness down there. On the positive side garnish house is well worth a visit. If your into fishing lots of sea angling spots close by, also shepherton lakes just the cork side of skibereen are stocked with rainbow trout daily permit is around €12 keep 2 fish catch and release the rest. Boat hire is €20. If you don't fish it's a great spot for a picnic. Lots of very good restaurants in the area but they can be a bit pricey. Enjoy

Thanks Chris. Not into fishing at all but looks like there's plenty of nice scenery, walks, etc, and I'll arrive with a car stocked full with craft beer to make up for the absence thereof in the local pubs.

The fact that there's a play park for the kids only 5 mins' walk from the cottage swung it for us (see what I did there?)

It's like as asbo that is only into other asbos.

Do I have to finally give the kids the old 'When 1 asbo loves another asbo very much...' speech?

Baltimore is lovely too, try and get a ferry to cape clear, well worth it. Schull is a bit of a distance, but the fish factory has a chip shop attached to it run by a bunch of French chefs, well worth the trip! Best beach is Barley Cove, but that's a good aul spin.....

Cape Clear is lovely. Spent a month there when I was 16 met lots of Cork girls that month.suppose to be learning Irish but learnt other stuff instead.

+1 on all baltimore(food), cape clear(pub+pier), sherkin(beaches).
Sherkin is a nice day out if you've got kids. Plenty of beaches and exercise. Hotel bar close to the pier.

Spent two weeks down near Durrus last summer. Lovely spot but a bit of a desert on the classy booze front. They did have Budvar and Shepherds Neame historic IPA and Double Stout in the Spar in Schull, but I'm glad I stocked up before striking out.

Not into fishing and going down there? That's almost a crime. I spent a lovely week on the rocks around Eyeries catching Wrass and Conger eels there a few years back, was a great time altogether.

"Baby Hannahs" pub in Skibb has some craft beer. The Corner Bar across the street is a nice pub and has a trad session every Monday and a singing club once a month.  You get the odd celeb appearing there every now and then. The Paragon (aka Bernards) is probably the biggest pub in Skibb and may have some Pauliner/Budvar types.  The Church restaurant in Skibb is excellent and is in a cool building. It burnt down a few years ago (arson) and they have rebuilt it. There are some interesting photos of the inferno in there. Worth poping in for at least.  Mary Ann's restaurant in Castletownsend is supposed to be good. There is a Farmers market in Skibb every Saturday morning til 1am with all local cheese, fish, meat etc. There is often an orchard owner selling apples, jams and the like. He also sells 2.5L glass growlers for €8.

I forgot if you visit ballydehob most pubs have a wheat beer on draught and other german beers in bottles.

Ha, used to have one of those billy the big mouth bass before. Not seen it in a while, so suspicious that the wife might have chucked it.
