Fresh Yeast Starters Looking for a home WLP001 & WLP380

I have two starters I made recently for a brew yesterday, when pitched I pitched about 80% and then replaced the pitched starter with fresh wort, if you know what I mean,

anyways two very healthy starters

WLP380 - Hefe IV
WLP001 - Cal Ale

Ready to rock, looking for a good home and all that - patchable quantities.

The two brews took off like a rocket, especially the WLP380, now I have to clean up a mess !

Sorry - the offer is still good, the reason I was posting it in the NCB was I was hoping that if someone wanted it they would call round - free stuff and all that.

But I dont mind making an exception !

I'll pop it into one of my lovely coffee jars and bring it into work tomorrow - about 300ml.

The yeast count will be same as a while labs vial - IE - about 60-75% of whats ideal. It will work and be bubbling within 24 hours.
BUT if you put it into 1.5 litres of a starter tomorrow evening and keep at 22-25C  it will be perfect for Saturday morning.
You'll be bubbling within 4 hours.
Personally for a Pale Ale and IPA - I would over pitch to ensure full attentuation.

Regards

James

Not at all Declan ! You did organise an excellent cornie buy so  - what goes around etc !

I am just filling your yeast now - will bring it into town tomorrow - no problems as all.

I'm gonna put on a heather ale this weekend, and have a "WLP028 Edinburgh Scottish Ale Yeast". It was more expensive than the rest of the ingredients, so I hope to re-use it.

Anyone got guidelines how to...catch it from the krausen, and keep it safe ? And not screw up my ale ? Do they freeze ? How long can you keep it in the fridge ? (I might put on 20 litres every month, if the brew works, and I can find an alternate source of wild yarrow...heather is easy to find around Howth!).

The very simplest way is after primary fermentation, you rack into secondary.

There will be a lot of yeast and some trub in the bottom of the fermenter. Just pour it off into sterile jame jars or the like and they will keep in the fridge for a few weeks.

Will talk more about other ways next tuesday or at the RDS if you are going in!

There a few articles/how-tos here try searching "yeast harvest" or "yeast storage" and "slanting"
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Pat_buttercups

Im looking to do the heather ale aswell if you save me a bit ill split the cost of that yeast with you bigvalen

how long do starters keep? hard to get a clear idea from people?

molc

I've used mine up to 3 months old. I don't get through my beer very quickly, so if I haven't used a starter in 3 months, I make a new starter with it to bump up the yeast count and keep it alive. Of course that's another generation of mutations so you can't do it indefinatly.

I think I should get into slanting it to keep in the freezer, but I don't have a pressure cooker, so would need to get the slants premade and sterialised, which would most like cost more than just getting new yeast every now and then.
Fermenting: IPA, Lambic, Mead
Conditioning: Lambic, Cider, RIS, Ole Ale, Saison
On Tap: IPA, Helles, Best Bitter

Buttercups, this is the recipe I'm going with http://www.zymurgasm.com/FraochLeann-1.0.pdf - apparently it's based on the Fraoch beer, but I've been told that a little Yarrow helps too (20g dried was too much, might try 50g fresh instead). I have more than enough Sweet Gale (like, a box of dried stuff I got from a guy in Denmark), so you are willing to take some of that too. Or you can wait until mine is worth tasting :)

Pat_buttercups

cheers molc - Im always a lil bit uncertain with yeasts :)

Yea bigValen Thats relatively similar to what i was thinking of doing the Fraoch beer is very nice, any idea where to get the gale? should probably note thats a 10 gallon recipie Ill only be doing 5 XD

Rats

If you still have any of the "wlp001" I will take some off you on Tuesday.
