Turbo Cider + Apples

I am planning to make a batch of turbo cider this weekend.
I also have about 20kg of apples which should give me a couple of litres of juice.

Can I make the turbo cider like normal and just add the juice from the apples or will there be other steps involved.

Thanks

Bubbles

The short answer is yes. But you run the risk of allowing the yeasts that exist naturally on the skins to ferment the cider rather than the yeast you pitch. You might consider dosing the fresh apple juice with campden tablets to stun the natural yeast and allow the cultured yeast to flourish. In any case, turbo cider making is supposed to be a fairly relaxed affair. Just chuck it in, and give it lots of time to age.

I had a 5 litre batch of turbo cider last year, it was about 6 months before I thought it is was good.

Would any normal shops sell campden tablets or would I have to order online.

Simple answer is yes - the yeast you add from the packet will out compete the wild yeasts from the apples.

However "To be sure to be sure":

1. Start the turbo cider and allow it to ferment for a couple of days then add the fresh AJ

2. Start the TC and at the same time press the apples and sulphite the juice as required by the pH (See Cider 101 for info on Campden Tabs in fresh AJ). Then after a day or two add the fresh AJ.

If you go to the big Tescos like Clearwater you can get yeast nutrient and campden tablets.

Using 04 to make Cider will bring the very worst that yeast offers, I've never been a big fan of it even for beer and not the best for fermenting Apple Juice stick with the cheaper specific cider yeasts or Is
05 at a push, but your cider will still have a beerish taste.

Well going to add a counterpoint here. I fermented last year with 05, stalled at 1020 and then added 04 to finish up. Ended up quite clean and tasty, with a good Apple flavour coming through after a year of conditioning.
Fermenting: IPA, Lambic, Mead
Conditioning: Lambic, Cider, RIS, Ole Ale, Saison
On Tap: IPA, Helles, Best Bitter

Your banned he he!
I think my bias against 04 was built up in my early days of fermentation when it stalled on me twice I did a Demi with it and AJ on its own and it was like I mixed beer into it, in any case I don't use dry apart from Bry anymore and that's only in a blue moon so maybe I'm not the best reference.
I am wondering did the 05 just do the cleaning?
I deffo know of commercial breweries out there starting with 04 and finishing with 05 but never the other way around and yeast blending of liquid yeasts to change profile is in my ever expanding to do list.

My own bias against S-04 is simply that it tastes like ass. I can't fathom why commercial breweries are using it..

Never used the BRY yeast.. what are the advantages over US-05?

Leaves a more complex hop and malt flavour balance behind
05 is an amazing yeast for Homebrewers but is like hydrochloric in that it strips and scrubs everything
I'm sure I posted results here about a side by side IPA 05 Bry and 001 standoff using same wort ;)

Anyways back to prison toilet bowl turbo cider, yeah they used to scrub the toilet bowl and ferment apple juice given to them in the US in the u bend

Somebody convince me with pics that Bubbles and I are wrong :)

Ok sounds interesting, will have a search for that.

Just used S-04 on my first turbo cider batch. Why am I only seeing these glowing reviews this morning!!  :o

A reliable source informed me Nottingham is also an option and will be one of my trial batches this year

I have used a Chardonnay wine yeast + nutrient, also WLP-830 Lager yeast.

I may well try WLP-380 or another similar Hefe Weizzen yeast.

Once the cider has started to ferment its kicked outside like a Spartan baby to survive on its own through the winter!

Talking of winter: THEY who know things [i.e. Not Met Eirann] rekkon that its going to be a one or 2 in a 100 years cold winter this year!
