Just thought I'd mention: alpack in Sandyford sell bottles and crown caps and are very reasonable. Check out: http://www.alpack.ie/Glass_Beer_Bottles_Swing_Top__Crown_Finish/Default.292.html

COool.

Would those plastic buckets on the site be suitable for fermenters?

I was looking at those. Well cheap, it's says on the spec sheet they are food approved. Might be worth a look.

Damofto

yep they're fine for fermenters, lot's of us use them.

@damofto, do you drill out a hole for airlock and grommet or leave the lid on loosely?

Damien M

Drill a hole for a grommet and Bubbler. You can see the activity and thus monitor fermentation.

The allpack buckets are great I use them all the time, just note the following:

The lids have a tamper evident tabs which can be discarded, but be careful removing the lid.... unclick it the whole way round as is gets a good grip and if you don't the lid will crack.

The other thing to prolong their use is to be gentle on the cleaning. I use OXY and a cloth rather than a scrubber. The plastic seems easier scratch than the Homebrew buckets and don't stack in each other. Wastes space  I know but less likely of the outside bottom of one scratching the inside of the next!

Yes I drilled a hole as well, the grommets are €1 a piece at the homebrew company

I bought four of those buckets about a month ago that i'm using as FV. Drilled a hole with a 25mm bit and stuck a bung and bubbler in, it works.
