Anyone used this as a mash tun? Is there basically a heating element in it like a diy boiler with a temperature gauge that keeps cos in when the mash temperature drops below the set point? Wouldn't this scorch the grain adjacent to the element?

Recommended or not?

I started off with an electrim mash tun/boiler. It was never reliable and I'd often come back and the element would have kicked back on and my mash temps were all over the shop. I ended up just hitting my mash temp and turning it off and insulating the bucket.
Maybe things have moved on and that kinda thing is much more reliable but my element cut out from being caked with crud and I even burned a hole in my mash bag once.

Mine was probably old school though.

As Rossa says, lag it, get it to temp, kill the power.
A lagged bucket and STC is probably a better job.

An issue with relying on a Thermostat or Temp Probe is probe location combined with lack of circulation.

I have you now.
The controller looks like an STC.
I've not used one and nor done many BIAB, but imagine that sitting the grist while element is on would disperse the heat adequately.
