gonna need to keep up the preparing for a while XD, i have 2 ready to go and another 10 taken today so by next week i should know how many took and ill take another 10 or so

Pat,
I usually take the "Irish Man's" approach to (not) cutting!

What is your technique as I have a load of 1st & 2nd shoots that need to be cut out*

* Note to new growers:
When the bines start shooting its advised to remove the first 2 or 3 shoots as they have a greater "internodal distance" ** to what follows!

** Internodal:
The distance between the the leaf/flower nodes. Shorter IN distance = more cones  :)
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Pat_buttercups

hey will,

I tend to take off the shoots from the bottom where I can and grab a chunk or root with them Irishman style :P, that way they form there own rhyzome by the end of the season.
If i especially care that it will take or need more than shoots are coming up ill take a bit of the vine chop it off at both ends and put it in some damp compost with both ends (or sometimes just take a small vine and pop it in but it has a higher failure rate). if im doing it that way or its one i really want to make sure takes ill use rooting hormone and keep it in a "plastic bottle propagator" such as the one I gave you the bramleyX in.
one of the reasons I go to try and give them around so much is with the irishman style i tend to get loads with the cascade in particular and its always a shame to throw them away :P

Late april frost killed alot of the hop cuttings, have a few left more are being taken

Hi Pat,

Sorry I only realised that this was a North County Brewers Thread.

Is it ok if I get a cascade rhizome from you at some point? I can travel out to you.

Cheers

ah yea johnny sure no problem sure not everyone on the list is north county, just need to sort out collection from people out of town. im fact most NC brewers already have hop plants from me giving them out last year

Jonnycheech

Cool. Looking forward to harvesting some hops!!

My little cascade cutting made the last leg of it's journey last night, From Pat's garden via my cousin in tallaght and my parents house in kerry and finally to my place in nearly west cork  :)
Gonna transplant it to the biggest pot i can find tomorrow and start training shoots to layer out into individual plants ready for next year.

Huge thanks to Pat for taking the time and effort to take cuttings and offer them around to random homebrewers. Genuinely spreading the hoppyness   :)

Probably a little late on this thread, but would be very interested in target and/or BramleyX

My little plant stuttered a bit since I planted it and none of the existing shoots were growing anymore but in the last day or 2 new shoots are coming out and it's thriving. I'm guessing it'll need to put down roots this year and I'll be harvesting Cascade in about 15 months. Nice one Pat.

Would love some Cascade but I'm probably too late  :(

glad some are getting along. just add your name to the list and ill make sure to take extra cuttings comming up m8 :)
most of the cuttings will be taken over the next couple of weeks ive lost alot this year with the cold nights, its actually only been in the last week they have started growing properly again cold nights and late frosts killed a large portion of the cuttings, as well as some of my weaker plants from last year. I have 4 or 5 plants ready to go at the moment tho. little care might get a harvest off them this year (if only small). the rest will need to be grown up a bit more and taken greater care of early next year( kept away from the frost etc.)
